Samantha "Sam" Heydt (born April 20, 1986) is an American social practice and new media artist born and raised in New York City. She has lived and worked in Amsterdam, Athens, Paris, Sydney, Udaipur, Venice, and Vienna.[1] Her work addresses the disenchantment of the social psyche at the hands of the media and the desolation of the natural world.[2]

Life and work

Heydt was born and raised in New York City. As the daughter of the artist William Heydt,[3] her interest and exposure to art started at an early age.

After attending La Sorbonne, Cooper Union, University of Amsterdam, and University of Buenos Aires, she earned a Bachelor's in Photography and Communications from Parsons New School for Design graduating Summa Cum Laude from both programs.[4] Sam Heydt has attended a number of artist residencies: Nes, (Skagastrond, Iceland), BigCi (Bilpin, Australia)[5] and Earthskin (Coromandel, New Zealand).[6]

In 2012, Heydt launched Jane Street Studio, L.L.C.[7] a photo-studio in the Meatpacking district of Manhattan.[8] Since established, the company has expanded its focus from photography to design consultation and video work with clients in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.[9]

Heydt has done travel essays on the following countries: Antigua, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Barbados, Brazil, Belgium, Bangladesh, Croatia, Canada, Canary Islands: Madeira, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Curaçao, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and United States.[10][11]

Heydt has undertaken a range of altruistic and non-profit work for developing countries.[12] Her most recent involvement was in the 2014 production, Bulbul: Song of the Nightingale, a feature-length documentary that sheds light on the longstanding tradition of child prostitution in the Banchara tribe of Madhya Pradesh, India.[13]

As a fine art photographer, Heydt's work has been exhibited in a constellation of galleries and museums throughout the world; and sits in the permanent collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.[14] She is represented by VIMM Gallery[15] in Berlin, Germany as well as Noella Lopez Gallery[16] in Sydney, Australia.

Style and themes

Sam Heydt, Chrysanthemums, 2012, C-print mounted to acrylic glass, 200 x 150 cm.

Heydt's work continuously examining different phenomenologies of our hyper-mediated society wherein tabloids become history.[9] Heydt describes our time as one of continually deferred expectations and anxieties shaped by the media.[17] Her interest lies in semiology's role in the mutability of history, disillusionment of the social psyche and exploitation of a world increasingly reduced to a bottom line.[18] The mnemonic pretext of the photographic medium is also explored.[19]
