Saatchi Art is one of the world's largest international online art galleries. [1]

History

The company was originally known as Saatchi Online. The Saatchi Art marketplace contains original paintings, photography, drawings and sculpture by approximately 65,000 artists from 100 countries worldwide.[2]

Saatchi Art is selling and shipping artworks to collectors in over 80 countries. The company's online selection of artworks is curated by Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator of Saatchi Art and Vice President of Saatchi Art's Art Advisory service.[3]

The former CEO of Saatchi Art is Sean Moriarty. In August 2014, Saatchi Art was acquired by Demand Media, of which Moriarty is now CEO.[4] Saatchi Art is based in Los Angeles, California.

Curators

Rebecca Wilson is the chief curator and vice president of art advisory. Formerly a director at the Saatchi Gallery, London, where she was instrumental in the launch of the gallery's online presence.[5] In 2007, she created New Sensations, a prize for art students which identifies and supports the most exciting emerging artists in the UK.[6] Prior to joining the Saatchi Gallery, Wilson worked for 14 years in book and art magazine publishing: she was editor of ArtReview, and before that deputy editor of Modern Painters.

Hayley Miner is the director of art advisory to the trade.[7] Before joining Saatchi Art, Miner ran her own art consulting firm which she established in 2011, advising private and corporate clients on building their art collections.[8] She also worked for Michael S. Smith, who was designer for The White House, before starting her own design and art advising business. Prior to this, she worked on feature films for Warner Bros. and Paramount studios as a Directors Guild assistant director as well as a set decorator. Hayley is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles.

Katherine Henning is the associate curator. Formerly the Assistant Curator at Saatchi Art. She received her MA in History of Art and the Art Market: Modern and Contemporary Art from Christie’s Education, New York, and her BA in English Literature (Creative Writing) from University of Southern California. Jessica McQueen is also assistant curator. She earned her B.A. in Art History and English at the University of California, Los Angeles. She was formerly an assistant arts and entertainment editor for the Daily Bruin, UCLA's newspaper.

Controversies

Charles Saatchi lawsuit

In November 2014 Charles Saatchi, the owner of Saatchi Gallery, initiated legal action in the United Kingdom's Chancery Division of High Court of Justice against the current owners of Saatchi Art. He demands to stop using the name Saatchi Art due to a breach of an Intellectual Property agreement of February 18, 2010. He also asks to be paid out the share of the profit made by using the name Saatchi Art from the moment of alleged breach.[9]
