Roohi Zuberi (हिंदी - रूही जुबैरी) or (اردو- روحی زبیری ) is a social worker,[1][3] fighting for women's rights for more than three decades.[4] Her family has a long political and social lineage. She is also an active politician[5][6] and works with the Indian National Congress.[7][8]
Zuberi had also served as a Senior Cabinet Member in the Aligarh Muslim University. Afterwards she became Vice President and also President of the Students' Union.[4]
During her University day's she became District President of the National Students' Union of India.
In 1986, she established the Women's Welfare Society[1] which facilitates career counselling and training programmes for women free of cost, and assists in solving domestic violence cases. She also provides legal counselling to the poor and weaker section of society.
Zuberi is also a vocal advocate of minority rights[9] and the rights of weaker section of the society.[7]

The Women's Welfare society(महिला कल्याण समिति) is well known throughout northern India and central India. This society has become synonymous with providing women's rights among the poor.[4]
She was a Member of the Railway Board and the Telephone Advisory Board.

Zuberi is an active politician[10] and, in 2000, had contested for the post of Mayor of Aligarh on the Indian National Congress ticket. She is of the opinion that there is a need of enacting a Muslim matrimonial code in the future[11] and also of reforming Muslim Personal Law[11] within the limit of Shariah, and that the bride's consent[11] is very important at the time of marriage negotiations. She has stated that it is the responsibility of the bride's parents to seek her consent while finalising marriage.[11] 30 January 2014 she was inducted to Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee's Executive Committee.[12]

Roohi Zuberi belongs to a renowned family of Marehra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Her father Late Mr. Bashir Mahmood Zuberi (Advocate) (Born 1921-1993 died) was a prominent freedom fighter in Indian Independence Struggle against British raj. He was also a Social worker and politician who was Chairman of Marehra Municipal Board throughout his life,he gave much of his personal property for the development and welfare of local population. The B. M. Zuberi Hospital in Mareha, a government civil hospital, is named after him.[16]

Mrs. Zuberi is also related to Maulvi Bashir Uddin[17] who spend all of his assets to establish Islamia College, Etawah, Uttar Pradesh in 1888 which was a similar effort to establish another University as happened in the case of Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. He was a strong Congressite and wore Khadi and also published a highly respected paper al-Bashir.[17]

He was awarded Padma Shri, but he did not go to receive it, just as he did not go to receive the title of Khan Bahadur.[17] Former President of India Dr.Zakir Hussain was also a student of this institution.[18]
She is also the daughter-in-Law[19] of one of the greatest Mathematician and former Parliamentarian Dr Sir Ziauddin Ahmad,[20] one of the mentor of Aligarh Movement[20] and most famous Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University,[21] who served as Vice Chancellor for three terms and later on became the Rector of Aligarh Muslim University.

Matin Zuberi,[22][23] who was her maternal uncle, a leading scholar of international relations. Prof Zuberi was born at Marehra in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh on 15 July 1930. After obtaining his Master's degree from Aligarh Muslim University, he went to St. Anthony's and Balliol colleges in the University of Oxford. On his return home, he was appointed senior fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. He joined JNU in 1978 and continued there till 1995.
A professor of international politics and disarmament studies at Jawharlal Nehru University, Prof. Zuberi was arguably India's most perceptive academic observer of international nuclear developments.[24] His contributions went beyond academics.[22][24] His contributions went beyond academics.[24]

In three stints — 1990-91, 1998–99 and 2000–01 — he was a member of the National Security Advisory Board. On the last occasion he participated in the preparation of the Draft Indian Nuclear Doctrine.[22][24]

Earlier, he was a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament and Development.[24] Prof. Zuberi was also a member of the executive council of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and the governing body of the Society of Indian Ocean Studies.[22][24]

At the time of his death, Prof. Zuberi was working on a study, "Fateful decisions of the nuclear age." Despite his illness, he dictated a couple of paragraphs for an article on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal.[24]

She started her education in her hometown Marehra and thereafter moved to Aligarh for higher education. Her Alma Mater is Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Personal life and family

Roohi Zuberi is married to Ahmad Ziauddin and they have three sons, Md. Ziauddin(Rahi), Shahbaz Ziauddin, Sheeraz Ahmad [25] and a daughter Sadaf Ahmad.
