Roman V. Yampolskiy (Russian: Роман Владимирович Ямпольский) (born August 13, 1979) is a Latvian born computer scientist at the University of Louisville, known for his work on behavioral biometrics,[1] security of cyberworlds,[2] and artificial intelligence safety.[3] He holds a PhD from the University at Buffalo (2008).[4] He is currently the director of Cyber Security Laboratory in the department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the Speed School of Engineering.[5]
Yampolskiy is an author of some 100 publications,[6] including numerous books.[7] His work is frequently profiled in popular media, such as: the BBC,[8] MSNBC,[9] Yahoo,[10] New Scientist,[11][12] Alex Jones Radio show[13] and many others.[14]
AI safety
Yampolskiy has warned of the possibility of existential risk from advanced artificial intelligence, and has advocated research into "boxing" artificial intelligence.[15]
Intellectology
Intellectology is a field of study Yampolskiy has founded in 2015.[16][17][18] The field is to study the forms and limits of intelligence. Yampolskiy considers AI to be a sub-field of this.[16] One of the first works in intellectology is an attempt to determine the relation between various types of minds and the accessible fun space, i.e. the space of non-boring activities.[19] Analysing relations between various kinds of minds and the fun space is one example of an extension of the traditional human-centric space of research, and this is what intellectology is about.
