Reid Supply Company is a global supplier of industrial parts based in Muskegon, Michigan. It has been one of the major employers in the Muskegon region since its founding in 1948. History
Reid Tool Supply was started in 1948 by Mr. Liberty Reid. As an office manager and purchasing agent in a local tool supply and die shop, he discovered that there were many tools/parts which were not readily available. This inspired him to start Reid Tool Supply in his home, with the help of his wife, Gloria. Mr. Reid stocked those hard-to-get tools and parts in inventory for immediate delivery. Great customer service was one of the founding principles of Reid Tool Supply.[1] In about 4 years, Reid Tool Supply moved from Mr. Reid's house and into a newly constructed warehouse. By 2005, Reid Tool Supply was offering a wider range of industrial tools and parts, and changed its name to Reid Supply Company to reflect its expanded offerings.Reid Supply Company (global industrial parts distributor), United SignGraphics (signage, custom and large format printing), Reid Safety (outerwear, workwear, safety products), Total Quality Machining (machining services and customization of Reid Supply stock products) and Professional Parts Warehouse (snow plow parts and accessories) encompass the collection of Reid companies or Reid Entities.
Catalog
Reid Supply Company's catalog started as a 16-page catalog which was sent to over 5,000 machine shops. Today, the catalog is more than 850 pages and boasts 12 color-coded product categories (Manual Controls - Knobs, Handles and Handwheels, Clamps and Workholding, Tooling Components, Fasteners and Hardware, Leveling Devices and Vibration Control, Material Handling, Bearings and Power Transmission, Metalworking, Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO), Pneumatics and Hydraulics, Structural Systems and Safety.) Their catalog has been recommended by many industry experts - Stanford University,[2] South Point Hawaii.[3] You can also find a fully searchable online version of their catalog on their e-commerce site, which has a free downloadable CAD library with over 90% of the products in their catalog represented as CAD drawings.[1]
Philanthropy
Reid Supply Company was amongst the first in the Muskegon area to take a proactive approach on banning smoking in the work place.[4] Reid Entities (the collection of Reid companies) also has a policy of rewarding employees that participate in blood drives. As Red Cross Michigan puts it, "This 60-year old collection of local companies in Muskegon is never short on ways to bring creative twists to its quarterly blood drive." [5]
Government relations
Reid Supply Company has dealt with the government on a regular basis. As a GSA contact holder and small business, Reid Supply Company has been awarded several federal and state contracts.[6] It was also a Bronze Sponsor in 2008 for the Natural Resource Commission (NRC) meetings.[7] The Michigan NRC is a seven member public body whose members are appointed by the Governor. NRC holds these meeting to provide Michigan Citizens with the opportunity to speak about issues and concerns they have with the way Michigan's natural resources are being managed.
