Ranga Reddy District (formerly: K. V. Ranga Reddy District and Hyderabad (Rural) District), is a district in the Indian state of Telangana. The district headquarters are located at Shamshabad.[3] The district headquarters are located at Shamshabad.[4] It was named after the former deputy chief minister of the united state of Andhra Pradesh, K.V.Ranga Reddy.[5]

History

The district was formed in 1978 when it was split from Hyderabad district.[6][7] Originally named Hyderabad (Rural) district, it was renamed after Konda Venkata Ranga Reddy, a freedom fighter who fought for the independence of Telangana from the Nizams and who went on to become the deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. In 2016, it was carved out during the districts re-organisation to create new Vikarabad district.[5]

Geography

Ranga Reddy District occupies an area of approximately 7,500 square kilometres (2,900 sq mi).[8]

A fresh water reservoir, called Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar, on the river Musi at Gandipet is the prime drinking water source to the capital city of Hyderabad/Secunderabad.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Ranga Reddy District has a population of 5,296,741. Of which males were 2,701,008 and females were 2,595,733.[9]

Economy

In 2006 the Indian government named Ranga Reddy one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640).[10] It is one of the nine districts in Telangana currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[10]

Administrative divisions

The district will have two revenue divisions of Ibrahimpatnam and Rajendranagar. They are sub-divided into 16 mandals.[3] Ranghunandan Rao is the present collector of the district.[11]

The present district is currently divided into six revenue divisions of Chevella, Vikarabad, Malkajgiri, Rajendranagar, and Saroornagar. They are sub-divided into 41 mandals.[3]
