Play Date is a children's music project consisting of Shanti Wintergate and Greg Attonito.[1][2] Their debut album Imagination in 2012 won a 2014 Parents' Choice Award.[3]
History
Imagination (2011-2012)
Forming the band in 2012,[4][5] Wintergate and Attonito toured the United States doing readings and singings of their children's book I Went for a Walk,[6] and upon returning home, began working the book into an album of kindie rock.[7] Shortly before the release of their debut, in the summer of 2012 they performed in Montreal at the first kid's stage at PouzzaFest.[5]
Play Date released their debut album Imagination on Fun Fun Records, which is the children's label run by Mike Park of Asian Man Records.[2] It was only the second album in the label's catalog, with Park having released his own children's album shortly before.[5]
The release combines influences from several genres, including surf rock, world music, folk pop,[7] and punk.[5] The album received positive acclaim from NPR's All things Considered,[8][9] and would go on to win a 2014 Parents' Choice Award.[3][7] They toured North America in support of Imagination, and in 2013 they played ACL Fest at the kids' stage.[7]
We All Shine (2014-2015)
Play Date, among other performances that year, was in the lineup for Lollapalooza 2014.[10] In 2015 the group released "Ninja Pajamas," which is a promo single for their upcoming studio album We All Shine. The album's release date is to be July 24, 2015[11] on Fun Fun Records. The album has fourteen tracks,[12] with the song "Ninja Pajamas" featuring underground hip hop vocalist Stef "P.O.S." Alexander.[13] A number of guest artists contributed to the album,[12] including notable jazz musician Brian Auger on guitar[13] and Michael McDermott of The Bouncing Souls on drums.[12]
After receiving an early copy in May 2015, Broadway World called the songs are "crafted with a sophistication that will surprise even the grumpiest of grownup... [there are] flecks of garage rock, dancehall, pop, and synth, with influences ranging from Patsy Cline to They Might Be Giants."[13] AXS called it a "wonderful, artistic gem of a record."[14] The band announced a tour of the New York area and Washington state for the month of July.[14]
