Patrick Edward Joseph Ianni (born June 15, 1985) is a retired American soccer player.
Career
College and amateur
Ianni played college soccer at UCLA, where he was nominated the Hermann Trophy Award in his junior season. He also played in the Premier Development League with the Southern California Seahorses.
Professional
Ianni entered the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and was chosen by Houston Dynamo as the eighth overall pick.[1] After failing to break into the Dynamo first team on a regular basis, Ianni was loaned to USL-1 side California Victory in May 2007, but he played just two games before re-joining the Dynamo.
He made his first MLS start on June 24, 2007 against the Kansas City Wizards. In that game, he scored on a late header and contributed defensively in a 1-0 shutout win that helped earn him continued playing time as a center back. On January 26, 2009, Houston traded Ianni to Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for a 2010 MLS SuperDraft third-round pick.[2] He made his Sounders debut on May 16, 2009, on the road against FC Dallas and scored his first goal for the club against his former club Houston Dynamo on July 11, 2009.[3]
On January 15, 2014, Ianni was traded to Chicago Fire along with teammate Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and the 13th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for Jalil Anibaba, the 8th overall selection in the 2014 SuperDraft, and a conditional third-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.[4] He appeared in twelve matches with the club in 2014 season. At the end of the season Chicago Fire declined his contract option on November 18, 2014.[5]
After his release by Chicago at the end of the 2014 MLS season, Ianni announced his retirement from professional soccer on January 12, 2015.[6]
International
Ianni was a member of the U.S. U-20 national team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands, and the U.S. U-23 national team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Personal
Ianni is the brother of fellow professional soccer player Tayt Ianni, who played for the San Jose Clash in the MLS.
