Pasapalabra is a Spanish television game show, adapted from the British format The Alphabet Game.
Gameplay
In each episode, two contestants team with celebrities to play various games. A team's correct responses in these games score seconds, extending their contestant's time limit in the final game, known as el rosco final or el rosco.
In the rosco, gameplay proceeds through letters of the Spanish alphabet. For each letter, the host reads a definition of a word starting with or containing that letter. A contestant responds with a word, or passes by saying "pasapalabra". Completing the rosco with every response correct wins the show's progressive jackpot. If neither contestant wins the jackpot, the contestant with more correct responses returns in the next episode.
History
Pasapalabra first aired on Antena 3 in 2000, with Silvia Jato as host. Constantino Romero substituted Jato in 2002. Jaime Cantizano replaced Jato as host in 2006.
In 2006, a Pasapalabra jackpot of €2,190,000 became the largest prize ever awarded on a game show in Spain, and the third largest prize ever awarded on a game show in Europe.[2]
In 2007, Pasapalabra moved to Telecinco with Christian Gálvez as host.[3] Pasapalabra airs evenings on Telecinco, Monday through Friday.[1]
International versions
Argentina
An Argentinian version, Pasapalabra, aired in 2001 on Canal 9 and was hosted by Claribel Medina and again in 2016 on El Trece and was hosted by Iván de Pineda.
Colombia
A Colombian version, Pasapalabra, aired on RCN Televisión and was hosted by Jéssica de la Peña.
France
A French version, En toutes lettres, aired from 2009 to 2011 on France 2 and was hosted by Julien Courbet.
Italy
An Italian version, Passaparola, aired from 1999 to 2006 and again from 2007 to 2008 on Canale 5 and was hosted by Gerry Scotti with Claudio Lippi co-hosting in 1999.
Portugal
A version of the show has also aired in Portugal.
Turkey
A Turkish version, Passaparola, aired intermittently from 2002 to 2011 on Star TV and Kanal 1 and was hosted by Metin Uca, Mehmet Ali Erbil, and Mesut Yar.
United Kingdom
A British version, Alphabetical, has aired since 2016 on ITV and hosted by Jeff Stelling.
