Paronychium, or the "lateral nail fold", is the soft tissue surrounding the border of the fingernail or toenail. It keeps anything from getting underneath the nail, causing an infection[1]
Clinical significance
This tissue can become infected around an ingrown toenail or finger nail. The resulting infection is termed paronychia.
