Nykaa is an Indian e-commerce website founded in 2012 by Falguni Nayar.[2] It is headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra.[3] Nykaa sells fashion products of various brands, and ships to more than 900 cities across the country.[4]

History

Nykaa.com was founded by Falguni Nayar, former managing director of Kotak Mahindra Capital Company.[5] The word "Nykaa" is derived from the Sanskrit word “Nayaka” that means "actress" or "one in the spotlight".

Services

Nykaa is an e-commerce website offering beauty and wellness products. Along with a blog that provides make-up tips, it has an expert panel of makeup stylists, and skin, hair, personal care experts to answer questions related to beauty, health, nutrition and personal care.[6][7]

In March 2016, Nykaa introduced private labeled products in the bath and body care category.[8]

Funding

In June 2014, Nykaa raised 20 crore in funding from private investors including HNIs (high net-worth individuals) and non-resident Indians (NRIs).[9][10] In 2015, it raised $9.5 million from a group of Indian investors.[11] The fund-raising round, led by private equity firm TVS Capital, had Marico founder Harsh Mariwala, Hexaware founder Atul Nishar, and Dalip Pathak, former India and Europe head of Warburg Pincus, participate through their offices. Michael Carlos, former president of Swiss fragrance maker, Givaudan, has also invested in the company.[12]

Partnerships

Nykaa collaborated with Femina to host the ‘Nykaa.com Femina Beauty Awards’ in 2015 and 2016. The award function was created to highlight the best products and brands in the hair, makeup, fragrance, and skin categories in the Indian market.[13][14]

Corporate social responsibility

Nykaa has raised funds for Project "Nanhi Kali" on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2015. Project Nanhi Kali is an Indian NGO for girl child education that provides primary education to underprivileged girl children in India.[15]
