Nursing Council of New Zealand
The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) are the professional body responsible for the registration of nurses in New Zealand, setting standards for nursing education and practice.
The council was established in 1902. New Zealand was the first country to legally require nurses to be registered.
In 2013, the Nursing Council was involved in a professional conflict with the nurse Poh Sim Roberts, who was accused by the Tairawhiti District Health Board of professional incompetence as a member of a medical flight team. She denied these claims, supported by official documents and internal correspondence depicting her as an asset to her hospital with no negative feedback recorded, and instead felt she was being penalised for the service losing money. A mediation meeting was arranged which reached a settlement satisfactory to Nurse Roberts, but the experience having damaged her health, she made the decision to return home to England and resume her nursing practice there.[1]
