Nový Svět
Nový Svět is a music band from Vienna.
Biography
Created in 1997 by Jürgen Weber and Frl. Tost, Nový Svět is born with the will to bring some confusion into the so-called industrial uniformity. However, the group is neither tied to any musical style nor to any language, and each one of their released albums introduce the audience to a new aspect of the band.[1] Since their beginnings until today, Nový Svět have been ignoring the limits of musical categories to establish a unique mixture of folk music, minimal electronics, industrial music, free jazz, krautrock and noise music. Their lyrics are usually sung in Spanish or Italian, although sometimes they are also sung in English, pseudo-Esperanto, French or German.[2] They self-define themselves as a "grupo extremisto, folkloristos de la zona mundial" (bad Spanish for "extremist group, folklorists of the world wide zone").[3] Nový Svět was one of the very first projects to be released on Albin Julius' Hau Ruck! label where they found a home for their own recordings but also for many collaborations with other groups from the label's roster (Mushroom's Patience, Dernière Volonté, Foresta Di Ferro). Meanwhile, the Nový Svět members began their own labell The Nekofutschata Musick Cabaret to release albums by acts they considered worth of interest, aswell as some of their own recordings.
Message
In a 1999 interview, when asked if there existed any sort of conceptual art-idea behind Nový Svět, Jürgen replied that
"There's no art-idea at all. The main concept is our youth. Being part of a lost generation. Since the beginning of the century the longing for 'revolutions' and ideals has become smaller and smaller. Today we can't see any will to change anything. Maybe our message is: you don't have to behave social in an antisocial society." [2]
On a musical frame, he said:
"Of course there are traditions we can't run away from, like all styles of european folklore (for example). Our attempt is to break these traditions and make them valid for ourselves, make them concrete."[2]
Use of samples
One of Nový Svět's main features is the use of samples for the construction of their music: splinters of sound extracted from other sources and re-assemled in a new context in order to build their music. Jürgen has explained it in the following way:
"50% of the used samples are substitutes for lyrics or support the content of a song. They examine the topic from another point of view. So, there's the possibility of a parallel presentation of a personal approach (through the sung lyrics) and a more distant view (for example through passages from the news). The other half simply comes out of the radio when we put it on and adds some atmosphere to the creations."[2]
At the same time, he relates sound with territory:
"We love the idea of miles of cables under the ground connecting all the cities and people on the continent. These are the voices of the other cities."[2]
