Nollywood Reinvented also known simply as NR is a website launched in 2011 and dedicated primarily to film reviews. It also provides information about films, actors, producers and other film people. It is one of the first review platforms dedicated to Nollywood.

History

Nollywood Reinvented's website was created on 22 January 2011 and originally started on the Blogger platform before it migrated to WordPress in January 2013.[1] The creation was during an era in which Nigerian Cinema was beginning to embrace new filmmaking methods and the return to the once dead cinema culture.[2] The idea around Nollywood Reinvented was strongly centred on creating a strong online presence for Nigerian films.

Description

Nollywood Reinvented originally involved a category-based review system. In this system, there used to be nine categories: story, originality, predictability, directing and production, audio, soundtrack, acting, video and costumes and settings, each category would be commented on and graded - The points from the individual categories would be tallied and presented as the final grade score for a given film. In 2013, the format changed along with the move to wordpress; the website started reviewing films as a whole with category points displayed at the top of the review article. In January 2014, Nollywood Reinvented changed format again and stopped grading films released at the cinemas on the same level with direct-to-video films. The cinematic films were only graded on story, originality, predictability, production and music, following the rationale that cinematic movies must have at least passed the basic barrier of bad audio and video quality, inappropriate sets and costumes and so on. It was also stated that if a cinematic film is still flawed in these aspects, points would deducted from the general production. Nollywood Reinvented also creates a mini database for producers, directors, screenwriters and categorizes films by their production years. Viewers are also given the avenue to rate each movie and see what other viewers have rated the film alongside the NR rating.

Cinematic Movie Reviews

This section caters mainly for cinema audiences. It reviews films that must have had theatrical release, which are usually referred to as New Nollywood. Rating for this section is done on a percentile system and are colour coded.[3]

Home Video Reviews

This section reviews straight to DVD films; in which most are of average production value and generally bare the semblances and traits of old Nollywood. Movies in this category are rated on a 5-star system.[4] The categories rated in this section include: story, originality, predictability, directing and production, audio, soundtrack, acting, video quality and costumes and settings.[5]

Indigenous Movie Reviews

This section reviews films in African language. This section mainly reviews Yoruba and Igbo films, but occasionally includes Ibibio, Hausa (Kannywood) and Twi films. Films for this section make use of a 10-point rating system.[6]

Nolly USA Reviews

This section reviews Nigerian films made in the diaspora. Although they are popularly called Nollywood USA, these movies could be shot in any non-African nation. The rating for this section is done on a Letter grading system that ranges from A+ to F.

#NRAwards

Nollywood Reinvented holds a yearly survey for films known as the NR Awards. The nomination phase usually begins in the month of June or July and viewers would be able to nominate individuals or films in various categories. Nomination period lasts for two to three months, before the commencement of the voting process, which will carry on until the end of November, and winners announced in December.[7]
