My bubba is a Swedish/Icelandic female duo whose music is described as minimalistic, vocal-oriented folk[1] which 'belies a modern sensibility and often a sultry suggestiveness'.[2] The lyrics are playful [1] and the vocals are simultaneously disarming and delicate.[3]

Career

Founding and current members are Guðbjörg Tómasdóttir (Bubba) from Iceland and My Larsdotter from Sweden. They both sing. Bubba plays guitar and My plays a Norwegian Cittra (Lap Harp).

My bubba started out as My bubba & Mi (and was then a trio). Debut album How it's done in Italy was released in 2010.[4]

Goes Abroader, released in 2014, was recorded in LA's Seahorse Sound Studios and House of Blues Studios. The duo worked with Noah Georgeson, who previously produced albums for Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart.[5]

Early years

My and Bubba met by chance in Copenhagen.[6] Bubba answered an ad to rent a room in My's apartment, and they started singing together the day she moved in. Shortly thereafter they were invited to Italy to tour, and ended up recording their first album 'How it's done in Italy'.[7]

Touring

The group has toured Europe and the US with Damien Rice[8] and Matthew E. White, among others. In 2014 they performed at Roskilde Festival.[9] They have also played festivals like Iceland Airwaves, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, CMJ and Americana Fest.[10]

Reviews

"My bubba is two young women -- one from Iceland, the other from Denmark -- who sound like their generation's Simon and Garfunkel. With just a guitar and vocals, they are mesmerizing in their softer-than-soft, lilting songs. They were the unexpected hit at the Nelsonville Music Festival, where they played four sets. Their music or delivery did not change whether the audience was made up of 20 or 500 people. And the audiences' reaction -- hushed silence -- never changed." "...My bubba often end up in a place between Cocorosie and Hank Williams" - Politiken

"Bands don’t do it like this any more either. Every single one of the 1500 CD’s released on March 8th, 2010, is hand crafted. This alone is an absolute joy to behold, a band actively taking an interest in making their product unique, beautiful and worth the investment" – No Bullshit Music Reviews, 24 February 2011[11]

"To be clear: My bubba make music that doesn’t need stories or words of any kind. Two young women singing in close harmony, accompanied by guitar, double bass and the occasional drums and a second guitar; simple, pure, enduring, timeless" - Meike Schrader, MergeMusicMagazine.Com, 4 July 2013[12]
