Mikko Viljami Lindström (born August 12, 1976), more commonly known as "Linde", is a Finnish musician and songwriter. He is best known as the guitarist of the Finnish rock band HIM. With HIM, Lindström has released eight studio albums, many of which have been certified gold and platinum. Lindström has also released two solo albums, under the pseudonym Daniel Lioneye, as well as collaborated with several other artists in the supergroup WhoCares.

Early life

Mikko Viljami Lindström was born on August 12, 1976, in Klaukkala, Finland.[2] Lindström's father was an engineer, while his mother worked Finnair.[2] Lindström also has a younger brother who was born in 1980.[2] At age 10, Lindström received a Landola acoustic guitar for Christmas, and the first song he learned was "Heaven's on Fire" by Kiss.[2] Soon thereafter Lindström began taking guitar lessons.[2]

Lindström met future HIM-bandmate Ville Valo in seventh grade at the Oulunkylä comprehensive school.[3] The two later began playing together in a band called Aurora.[3] As a teenager, Lindström was also arrested twice.[4] The first arrest came when Lindström and a group of friends were charged with theft and breaking-and-entering for breaking the windows of a rehabilitation center for war veterans, and sneaking in to swim in the establishment's pool.[4] At age 15, Lindström was also arrested for driving under the influence.[5] Lindström applied to the Sibelius High School of music and dance, but was rejected, and began attending Käpylä night school.[5] Lindström was permitted not to perform Finland's national military service, as he was deemed "insane, incapable for warfare."[6]

Career

HIM

HIM was formed in the early 1990s by Ville Valo and bassist Mikko "Mige" Paananen, under the name His Infernal Majesty.[7] The band however broke-up in 1993, but was reformed in 1995, by Valo and Lindström.[7] Later rejoined by Mige, as well as keyboardist Antto Melasniemi and drummer Juhana "Pätkä" Rantala, the band, now called "HIM", released their debut album Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 in 1997.[8] In 2000, now with drummer Gas Lipstick and keyboardist Juska Salminen, HIM released Razorblade Romance, which reached number 1 in Finland, Austria and Germany.[9][10][11][12] Its first single, "Join Me in Death", also charted at number 1 in Finland and Germany, eventually going platinum in the former.[9][10][11][13]

Following the addition of Janne "Burton" Puurtinen on keyboards, the band released Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights and Love Metal in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Both cracked the top ten in several countries, and became the band's first albums to chart in the United Kingdom and the United States.[14][15] After relocating to the US, HIM released Dark Light in 2005, which became the group's most successful album to date, going gold in Germany, the UK, the US, and platinum in Finland.[13][16][17]

In 2007, HIM released Venus Doom, which went gold in Finland and Germany, and gave the band their highest US-chart position at number 12.[15][13][16] After 2010's Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, the band went on hiatus after drummer Gas Lipstick was diagnosed with a repetitive stress injury and nerve damage in his hands.[18] After eight months of uncertainty, the band regrouped and eventually released the album Tears on Tape in 2013.[18]

In 2001, Linde Lindström released the album The King of Rock 'n Roll under the moniker Daniel Lioneye.[19] Lindström sang and played guitar, while Ville Valo (under the pseudonym Bil Bao) played drums and Mige played bass.[19][20] Prior to the album's release, the group had only played a handful of gigs at various parties.[20] The album's title-track was later used by professional skater and television personality Bam Margera as the theme to his TV series Viva La Bam.[19] In 2006, "The King of Rock 'n Roll" became the second-most-played Finnish song in the world.[19]

In 2010, Daniel Lioneye released Vol. II, now with Lindström on guitar, bass and vocals, Burton on keyboards, and Black Vomit Bolton on drums.[21] Much heavier than the group's debut album, Vol. II was described as "an extreme rock n' roll album with influences from black metal."[21] In 2011, the band toured the US for the first time, in support of Cradle of Filth.[22] The band's touring line-up consisted of Lindström, Mige, Burton, Seppo Tarvainen on drums and Manu on backing vocals.[22]

Daniel Lioneye reformed at the 2014 edition of HIM's annual New Year's Eve -festival Helldone, with Lindsrtöm on guitar and vocals, Mige on bass and Ville Valo on drums.[23] On June 29, 2016, it was announced that Daniel Lioneye would release its third album Vol. III on August 19, with Lindström on guitar and vocals, Mige on bass, Burton on keyboards and Seppo Tarvainen on drums.[19] The band also announced five tour dates for September in Finland.[19] On June 30, 2016, Daniel Lioneye released the official track-listing for Vol. III, as well as its first single "Ravensong".[24] On August 4, Daniel Lioneye released the official music video for the song "Aetherside" directed by Matti Penttila.[25]

Other musical work

In 2006, Lindström played guitar on Welcome to Carcass Cuntry by Jeff Walker und Die Fluffers.[26] In 2007, Lindström wrote and recorded several songs on Manna's debut album Sister.[27] In 2011, Lindström took part in the WhoCares-supergroup, with Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, Jason Newsted, Jon Lord and Nicko McBrain.[28] The group recorded the double single "Out of My Mind / Holy Water", with the intent to support the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia, which was destroyed in a 1988 earthquake.

Personal life

On March 12, 2003, Lindström's girlfriend, Finnish-Algerian singer Mariam ”Manna” Jäntti, gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Olivia.[29][30] Lindström and Manna later married, but divorced, and in 2010 Lindström became engaged to Toni-Marie Iommi, the daughter of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi.[30] In 2013, the couple were reported to have broken-up.[31]

Linde Lindström uses two Laney amp heads, as well one Peavey 5150, which is used for the main lead sound.[32] One of the two Laneys has an Electro-Harmonix Octave Multiplexer, while the other one has a Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh Fuzz.[32][33] The signal from the amps is routed with a Voodoo Labs Amp Selector.[33] Lindström uses a Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah, as opposed to normal wah pedal, because according to him, the bass wah "is more aggressive than the normal one."[34]

Lindström has used Gibson SGs most of his career. He currently uses only one SG live, which is fitted with a Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge position.[34][35] Lindström has also used Fender Telecasters in the studio, as well as a Gibson Flying V, a Gibson EDS-1275 and a Gretsch, as seen in the music videos for "Right Here in My Arms" and "In Joy and Sorrow" among others.[32][36][37]
