Michiel Borstlap
Michiel Borstlap (born 5 August 1966 in The Hague) is a Dutch pianist and composer.
Career
In 1992 Borstlap completed his studies at the Conservatory in Hilversum, where he received from Henk Elkerbout piano lessons and Rob Madna. He won the first prize as best soloist at the Europe Jazz Contest in Brussels. Two years later he gave his first concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
In 1996 he received for his composition "Memory of Enchantment", the prestigious American Thelonious Monk / BMI Composers Award. Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter took it for their album 1 + 1 , and it also formed an integral part of the repertoire during the world tour it between 1997 and 2000 made. A year later, the pianist signed an exclusive recording contract with Verve.
In 2003 he was commissioned by the Emir of Qatar invited to compose the Arab opera Avicenna '. Two years later he founded his own record label, Gramercy Park Music. In 2007 Michiel Borstlap received a nomination for the Polar Music Prize. In 2008 he performed with his project Eldorado Concert & Club, and the duo Bill Bruford and Michiel Borstlap. That year he received a Golden Calf for his music in the film Tiramisu , directed by Paula van der Oest. He was also nominated for an Edison for the album Eldorado . In 2009, Michiel Borstlap was with the jazz formation BBG (Bennink-Borstlap-Glerum) on tour, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Japan. This album in 2009 received the Edison Jazz Award.
The solo albums he released in 2010 marked a turning point in the career of the pianist. In 2010 he released SOLO 2010 at the 2011 album Blue (Songs from Father to Daughter) '. In 2012 he signed an exclusive contract with BMG. In 2013 Michael toured with his solo album 'Reflective' from home and abroad. This album appeared a piano book.
In 2014 released his album 'Frames'. He toured with this album by the Netherlands, and in 2015 Frames Music played a central role in cooperation with the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. In 2015 he released a digital album, "Blue Seaons; Winter ', recorded his first' upright 'piano. In 2016 released a live album, recorded at the Amsterdam ArenA. The album "Arena" includes both a CD and a DVD. During 2016 Michiel Borstlap play a concert in the Hague Municipal Museum, where he gives solo concerts and invites a 'Mystery Guest'.
Michiel Borstlap performed in 75 countries in North & South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe.
