Martiros Sarukhanyan
Martiros Sarukhanyan (Martik Levonyan, 1873, Shusha - 1895, Garahisar mountain, Western Armenia) was an Armenian fedayee, political activist.
Sarukhanyan finished the College in Baku, then continued his graduation in the Saint Petersburg State Institute of Technology. Then studied in Geneva, where supported Social-Democrat Hunchakian Party Central Committee. As an Hunchakian leader in 1894 he moved to Western Armenia, worked in Tabriz, then in 1895 he became the Hunchakian leader of Van. He joined Dashnak leader Peto and Armenakan Mkrtich Avetisyan to organize the self-defence of Van. Martiros was surrounded by Turkish troops near Garahisar mountain, where he was killed.
Avetis Nazarbekian and Shushanik Kurghinian dedicated poems to his memory.
