Marion High School is a high school in Marion, Indiana with more than 1,000 students.
History
Marion High School was established before 1900. The high school has been rebuilt several times since 1902.[1]
The early history of interscholastic athletic competition in Indiana was influenced by J. T. Giles, of Marion, Indiana.[2]
Athletics
The name of the students and the athletic teams is the "Giants", and their teams compete in Indiana's North Central Conference. The school is best known for its great basketball teams, winning eight state championship titles & are tied for the most in the 100 plus years of tournament play with conference rival Muncie Central.
These state championships include back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976 and also a three-peat in 1985, 1986, and 1987. From 1975 to 1987 the Marion Giants dominated Indiana High School basketball with five state championships and two semi-state appearances and three Indiana Mr. Basketball award winners.
Former Marion basketball coach Bill Green holds the state record with six state championships, of which the back-to-back-to-back crowns of '85, '86 and '87 became known as “Purple Reign”.[3] Marion has won state titles in 1926, 1975, 1976, 1985, 1986, 1987, 2000 (class 4A) & 2016 (class 3A). This ties them with Muncie Central for the most state titles in boys' basketball. They have won a state record 15 Semi-States, 38 Regionals & 67 Sectionals.
