Marian Ewurama Addy, born Marian Ewurama Cole (c. 1941 – 14 January 2014) was a Ghanaian biochemistry professor[1] and the first hostess of the Ghana National Science and Maths Quiz.[2][3]
Education
Ewurama attended St Monicas Senior Secondary School and Achimota School for her secondary education.From January 1956 to June 1960 where she obtained her 'O' and 'A' level certificates.She then continued to Holy Child Girls School in Cape Coast.professor Marian Ewurama Addy was the first woman professor to come out of the University of Ghana.
Career
Ewurama was a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Ghana.
She was the Chair for the Policy Committee on Developing Countries (PCDC), she also chaired the National Board for Professional and Technicians Examinations (NABPTEX) .
Professor Addy was appointed as the President of the Anglican University College of Technology in January 2008.[4] She also served as a member on member of WHO Regional Expert Committee on Traditional Medicine, an worked as an advisor to the International Foundation for Science, in Stockholm, Sweden. She was the Founder and First Executive Secretary of Western Africa Network of Natural Products Research Scientists (WANNPRES), which established February 2002.
She had extensive experience in academia lecturing Biochemistry both basic and applied, to undergraduate, post-graduate, dental and medical students at the University of Ghana, Legon and subsequently at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC.[5]
Awards
- CIMG Marketing Woman of the Year, in 1995, for marketing Science.
- UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the popularization of science in 1999.
- The Africa-America Institute’s Distinguished Alumna for Excellence in 1998
- The Millennium Excellence Award for Educational Development.[6]
- Inducted as a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999.
