Malachi Kirby (born 20 September 1989[1]) is an English actor known for his roles in EastEnders and Doctor Who.[2] He was born in London and grew up in Battersea. His parents have Jamaican ancestry. His father died when Kirby was six, and his mother is a government worker. Because he was shy, at 14 years old, his mother signed him up for classes at the Battersea Arts Centre. Later, Kirby studied acting at the Identity School founded by actor, Femi Oguns.[3]
Kirby starred as Kunta Kinte in the 2016 version of Roots, portraying the lead character.[4][5] His performance was well received by critics.[6][7]
Kirby was shortlisted for the 'Outstanding Newcomer' award at the 2011 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.[8]
In October 2016, Kirby starred in an episode of the anthology series Black Mirror directed by Jakob Verbruggen entitled "Men Against Fire".[9][10]
