Louisiana State Route 3 (LA 3) was one of the 98 original state highways that were established in 1924. It was split into two separate segments, with the southern section running in a south to north direction for 49.82 miles (80.18 km), spanning from Baton Rouge to the Mississippi state line. The northern section ran for 123.41 miles (198.61 km) from Vidalia to the Arkansas state line, in a south to north direction.

Route description

"Beginning at the Arkansas State Line near Miliken, thence through Lake Providence, Tallulah, St. Joseph, to Vidalia, also beginning at the line between Louisiana and Mississippi near Morganza through St. Francisville to Baton Rouge." - 1924 Louisiana Legislative Route Description, with Morganza listed as an erroneous town.

Baton Rouge to Mississippi

LA 3 began at an intersection with LA 7 in downtown Baton Rouge, where LA 7 met with LA 1 at Florida Street. LA 3 continued north towards Scotlandville, curving towards Zachary and St. Francisville. It eventually entered Mississippi south of Woodville. The only numbered remnant of LA 3 exists as West Feliciana Parish Road 3, a parish road along the older alignment of LA 3.

Mississippi (Vidalia, La.) to Arkansas

LA 3 re-emerged in Louisiana in Vidalia after crossing the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge, following the path of an oxbow river to Ferriday, where US 84/LA 6 turned to the west, while US 65/LA 3/LA 15 continued to the north. In Clayton, LA 3 turned towards Tallulah, while LA 15 turned towards Monroe. LA 3 passes through the Louisiana Delta en route to Tallulah, crossing LA 4 before entering Arkansas.

Louisiana State Route 3-D

Louisiana State Route 3-D (LA 3-D) was a state highway in Louisiana. It spanned 8.72 miles (14.03 km), serving northeastern Louisiana, spanning from Lake Providence to the Millikin community. It was an older alignment of LA 3.

LA 3-D was essentially only an older alignment of LA 3, following the old road to the northern end of Lake Providence, then north to meet the levee. LA 3-D then followed the Old River along Pittman Island, actually a part of Mississippi, then connected back with LA 3 at the Millikin Community.

The entire highway is in East Carroll Parish.
