Literature and comics
- Give Me Liberty (1990) by Frank Miller: In 1996, a year after Martha Washington's birth, her father is violently killed in a protest against squalid standards of living at the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago.
- The Forge of God (1987) by Greg Bear is set in 1996, when a faction of aliens attacks and threatens to destroy Earth.
- The White Plague (1982) by Frank Herbert: On May 20, 1996, the family of the protagonist John Roe O'Neill are killed by an IRA bomb explosion. Their deaths cause him to go insane and develop multiple-personality disorder, with his contrasting personalities conspiring to unleash a deadly plague on women in Ireland, England and Libya (for their support of terrorism and the historical English oppression of the Irish).
Computer and video games
- Revolution X (1994) was set two years into the future from its release (i.e. 1996), where, in a dystopian world, the New Order Nation cult have abducted the entirety of the rock band Aerosmith. Players must find each member of the band by shooting enemies with compact discs (CDs) as their ammunition.
Film and television
- Alien Nation (1989-1990) was partly set in 1996.
- Demolition Man (1993): The beginning of the film's plot is set in 1996, up to the scene where LAPD Sergeant John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) is cryogenically frozen for manslaughter. (He is re-awoken in 2032 for his parole hearing.)
- Independence Day (1996) is set in 1996.
