List of Vice Presidents of the United States by age
This is a list of Vice Presidents of the United States by age. The first table charts the age of each United States Vice President at the time of their presidential inauguration (first inauguration if they were elected to multiple and consecutive terms), at the time they left office, and at the time of their death. Each vice president's age at death, their lifespan, is measured in two ways; this is to allow for the differing number of leap days occurring within each one's life. The first figure is the number of days between date of birth and date of death, allowing for leap days; in parentheses the same period given in years and days, with the years being the number of whole years that the vice president lived, and the days being the number of days after their last birthday. Where the vice president is still living, lifespan is calculated up to December 14, 2016.
Overview
The median age of accession is roughly 53 years and 6 months, which is how old John Adams was at his inauguration. The youngest vice president to assume office was John C. Breckinridge, at the age of 36 years, 47 days. Serving only one term, he became and remains the youngest at the time of leaving office. The oldest vice president to assume office was Alben W. Barkley, at the age of 71 years, 57 days. He was also the oldest in office when he left office.
The oldest living vice president is George H. W. Bush, born on June 12, 1924 (age 92 years, 185 days); he is also the oldest living president. The second oldest living vice president, Walter Mondale, has the distinction of having the longest post vice presidency in U.S. history, 35 years, 329 days. The youngest living vice president is Al Gore, born on March 31, 1948 (age 68 years, 258 days). The longest-lived vice president was John Nance Garner, who died at the age of 98 years, 350 days. He surpassed Levi Morton for this distinction on November 23, 1964. (Morton had surpassed the longevity of the nation's first Vice President, John Adams, on January 20, 1915.) The shortest-lived vice president was Daniel D. Tompkins, who died at the age of 50 years, 355 days.
Since 1797, when John Adams' service as Vice President ended, there have been only two periods in American history where there has not been a living former Vice President:
- July 4, 1891 to March 4, 1893, between the death of Hannibal Hamlin (Abraham Lincoln's first Vice President), and the end of Levi Morton's vice presidency; and
- May 16, 1920 to March 4, 1921, between Morton's own death, and the end of Thomas R. Marshall's vice presidency.
The greatest number of former vice presidents alive at any one time has been six, and included: Richard Nixon, Spiro Agnew, Gerald Ford, Walter Mondale, George H. W. Bush, and Dan Quayle. This occurred between Al Gore's first inauguration as Vice President on January 20, 1993, and Nixon's death on April 22, 1994.
Prior to passage of the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, a vacancy in the office of the Vice President could not be filled until the next post-election inauguration. Such vacancies were common; sixteen occurred before the 25th Amendment was ratified, as a result of: seven deaths, one resignation, and eight cases in which the vice president succeeded to the presidency. This amendment allowed for a vacancy to be filled with appointment by the President and confirmation by both chambers of the U.S. Congress. Since the Amendment's passage, two vice presidents have been appointed through this process, Gerald Ford in 1973 (following Spiro Agnew's resignation) and Nelson Rockefeller in 1974 (following Ford's ascension to the presidency upon Nixon's resignation).
Five U.S. Vice Presidents have lived into their 90s. They are (in order of birth):

Timeline of oldest living Vice Presidents
Of the 47 persons who have served as vice president, 21 have become the oldest such individual of their time. The first vice president, John Adams, held this distinction from his inauguration on April 21, 1789, until his death on July 4, 1826 (37 years, and 47 days, a record that still stands). At 53 years of age when he took office, he remains the youngest vice president to hold this distinction. Lyndon B. Johnson became the oldest living vice president upon the death of Harry S. Truman in December 1972, but outlived him by only 27 days. Truman was the oldest to acquire this distinction, at age 83, in November 1967.
On three occasions the oldest living vice president lost this distinction, not by his own death, but due to the nation electing a vice president who was older. John C. Calhoun became the oldest living vice president following the death of Aaron Burr on September 14, 1836, but lost this distinction on March 4, 1837 when Richard M. Johnson was inaugurated. Charles G. Dawes who the oldest living vice president while in office following the death of Thomas R. Marshall on June 1, 1925, lost this distinction on March 4, 1929 when Charles Curtis was inaugurated (Dawes subsequently became the oldest living vice president again when Curtis died in February 1936). More recently, Hubert H. Humphrey, who became the oldest living vice president upon Lyndon B. Johnson's death, ceased being the oldest living when Nelson A. Rockefeller became vice president in December 1974. John Adams, Martin Van Buren, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford also had the distinction of being the oldest living president, as does George H. W. Bush currently.
