Inside Out is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated comedy-drama adventure film, co-written and directed by Pete Docter. The film is set in the mind of a young girl named Riley Andersen (Kaitlyn Dias), where five personified emotions—Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling)—try to lead her through life as she moves to a new city and has to adjust to her new life.[1] After premiering it at the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2015, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released the film theatrically in the United States on June 19, 2015. Made on a production budget of $175 million,[2] Inside Out grossed a worldwide total of $857 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2015 and the 49th highest-grossing film of all time as of July 2016.[3][4] Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, surveyed 317 reviews and judged 98% to be positive.[5]
The film has received 52 awards from 114 nominations; its direction, screenplay, and Poehler's voice performance have received the most recognition from award groups. Inside Out won Best Animated Feature and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 88th Academy Awards. It also received a BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, Critics' Choice Award, New York Film Critics Circle Award, Satellite Award, and Saturn Award for Best Animated Film. The film led the 43rd Annie Awards with fourteen nominations, and won ten awards,[6] including Best Animated Feature, Outstanding Achievement in Directing in an Animated Feature Production for Docter and Outstanding Achievement in Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production for Smith.
Inside Out was listed in National Board of Review's top ten films of the year, which also awarded it Best Animated Film. The American Film Institute selected Inside Out as one of the top ten films of the year. It was runner-up for Best Animated Film at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and San Diego Film Critics Society Awards.
