She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Virginia (née Cummings) and Stanley Roberts, a U.S. air marshal. She has one brother, Stanford Roberts. Growing up, she was close to her maternal grandmother, Virginia "Virgie" (Collins) Cummings, who lived with her family.[2][3] She graduated from Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee. In the early 1980s, she graduated from University of Mississippi, where she became a member of the Kappa Delta sorority, was a cheerleader,[4] and met her future husband, Sean Tuohy, a basketball player for the Ole Miss Rebels.[5]

Tuohy married her husband Sean Tuohy in 1982. They have three children. Their son Michael Oher (adopted) is a former Ole Miss Rebels football player, a Baltimore Ravens first-round draft selection, and the current starting offensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers.[9][10] Their daughter Collins Tuohy (born December 1986) was a state champion pole vaulter and a cheerleader at the University of Mississippi. Their son Sean "SJ" Tuohy, Jr. (born July 1993) currently plays guard for the Loyola Greyhounds.[11] Tuohy and her husband live in Memphis, Tennessee.
