Larry A. Kaczala

Larry Alan Kaczala (8 December 1956 – 8 June 2010) was a real estate lawyer and American politician of the Republican party who was the party's 2004 nominee to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcia C. "Marcy" Kaptur in Ohio's 9th congressional district.

Personal life

Born in Toledo, Kaczala graduated from Toledo's Central Catholic High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Toledo in 1978. In 1983 he graduated with honors from the University of Toledo College of Law.[1] In 1984 Kaczala was awarded the Order of the Coif, an honor given to top American law school graduates.[2] Prior to entering politics Kaczala worked in the Lucas County auditor's office from 1982 to 1989.[3]

In 1992, Kaczala donated one of his kidneys to his sister Sharon Fickel, and he had been involved for many years with the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio.[4]

Political career

Kaczala was elected to Toledo City Council in 1991, and he served in that position until he was appointed Lucas County auditor in 1993. Kaczala served as auditor for fourteen years until 2007. While working as auditor, Kaczala also served as the president of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio. He also served as president of the Northwest Ohio County Auditors’ Association, which includes Sandusky, Ottawa and Erie counties.[5]

Kaczala considered running for a position as Ohio's secretary of state in 2002. However, he dropped out of the race when incumbent Ken Blackwell decided to seek re-election and run again as auditor in that year's race.[6]

In 2007, Kaczala ran for political office again, this time for Toledo Municipal Court, but suffered the same result at the hands of the Republican party-endorsed Judge Michael R. Goulding. Kaczala also taught courses in real estate law, civil rights, and ethics at the University of Toledo.[7]

Death

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010, Kaczala apparently committed suicide, leaping from the fifth floor of the parking garage at the Toledo Hospital.[8]
