Laikipia University is a Kenyan University located in Nyahururu. It is the premier university of education (arts) in the country currently. It has seven campuses: Nakuru campus, Embu campus, Nyahururu Town campus, Naivasha campus, Nairobi City Campus (Upper hill TBM Plaza), Mararal campus and Eldoret campus.
History
Laikipia university was founded in 1929 as a primary school by William Thomas Alfred Levet.[1] Between 1965 and 1970, the Institution served as a Large–scale Farmers training (LSFTC) college. The LSFTC was administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. In October 1979, it was converted into an Animal Husbandry and Industry Training Institute (AHITI) offering a two year course leading to a Certificate in Animal Health In 1990, Laikipia University was established as a Campus of Egerton University. This followed the recommendations of a Government Committee appointed to look into modalities of absorbing a double intake of students from Secondary Schools. It was meant to offer Education courses for graduate teacher-training.[2]
Laikipia University was awarded Charter on 19 February 2013 by the then President of the Republic of Kenya; his Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki This made the institution a fully-fledged University.[3]
Campuses
The Main Campus
Laikipia University Main Campus is located 50 km from Nakuru town and 11 km from Nyahururu Town, along the Nakuru - Nyahururu Highway. It is situated in a serene environment which is conducive for learning. The Main Campus is the University nerve centre where most courses are offered and has the majority of students. The Main Campus has numerous facilities ranging from classrooms, laboratories, library, cyber cafe, bookshop, sports & games facilities, hostels for student accommodation, a health centre, restaurant, farm and Lake Chacha, among others..
The university is into collaborations with Embu college, Nakuru Teachers College, Elgon View College, Kenya Institute of Development studies and Karlstad University(Sweden).[4]
Nyahururu Campus
The Campus was established in 2002 as the Centre for Continuing Education to cater for the training needs of the local community and offer educational opportunities to those interested in pursuing both vocational and higher education.
The Campus is located in Gatero Building behind the Nuclear Investments Stage. It is also a few metres from the Nyahururu Town Clock and Kenol Petrol Station.[5]
Maralal Campus
Maralal Campus is situated on a 600-acre of land granted by the County Council of Samburu to Laikipia University from the 1,600-acre Namotio Farm. The Campus is located 5 kilometres west of Maralal Town, and is adjacent to Maralal High School.
To enhance access to university education in Maralal Town, a Town Campus has been opened at the District Centre for Early Childhood Education (DICECE) next to Samburu County administrative headquarters. The Centre is offering Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate Programmes on full-time, school-based and part-time basis. [6]
Naivasha Campus
Naivasha Campus was established in 2010 with the following objectives:
- To address the training needs of individuals in various occupations.
- To offer learning opportunities to individuals interested in pursuing certificate, diploma, degree and post-graduate courses.[7]
The Campus is located at Eagle Centre Building (off-Mbaria Kaniu Road) in Naivasha Town. The Campus is currently offers courses in buiness, commerce, accounting and education at the diploma, undergraduate and post graduate level
