Women's suffrage in Kuwait

When voting was first introduced in Kuwait in 1985, Kuwaiti women had the right to vote.^[1] The right was later removed. In May 2005, the Kuwaiti parliament re-granted female suffrage. The bill, which passed with 40 votes for and 10 against, allowed women to vote and run in parliamentary and local elections.^[2] Four years later, in May 2009, four female candidates won parliamentary seats in a general election.^[3]

In the area of nationality, Kuwaiti women do not have the right to give her children Kuwaiti citizenship if she marries a non-Kuwaiti man. Kuwaiti women cannot receive residential care and other rights that men can have if they marry non-Kuwaiti women.
