Kiran Chemjong (Nepali: किरण चेम्जोङ) (born 1990-03-20) is currently enrolled in goalkeeper positions from the Three Star Club and Nepali National Team. After graduating from ANFA Academy Chemjong joined Machhindra Football Club where he spent a year. After showing impressive performance between the sticks for Red Lions, Mega Three Star Club offered him a job in 2065 B.S. He has won many tournaments with Mega Three Star Club including British Gurkha Cup and Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament.[2]

Club career

Born in Dhankuta, Chemjong graduated from the ANFA Academy and joined the Machhindra Football Club. After spending one year at the club Chemjong's impressive performances earned him a move to the Three Star Club in 2007. He has won many tournaments with Three Star Club including the British Gurkha Cup and Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament.[3]

International career

He is currently considered as 2nd best goalkeepers in Nepal. He has a height advantage over more senior keepers like Bikash Malla and Ritesh Thapa. He has produced brilliant displays against oppositions bringing wide acclaims.[4] Chemzong played debut match for Nepal in 2008 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, although he broke his jaw in the match.[3] He debuted at the home ground against Afghanistan.[5]

In the 2012 Nehru Cup Chemjong won the man of the match award in Nepal's game with India.[6] His performance in the match earned praise from the Indian Newspaper The Hindu and from the Maldives head coach István Urbányi.[7]

Recently Chemjong's spot as Nepal's national goalkeeper has come under scrutiny due to the inconstancy in his play. During the 2013 SAFF Championship quarter finals against Afghanistan Chemjong let a high ball slip between his hands allowing Sandjar Ahmadi to score the only goal of the game. Several Nepali football fans and critics have called for other goalkeepers to be given chances.[8]

Style of play

He is calm with the ball and has quite good reflexes and also good in the air. He does however have a weakness in judging high balls. Chemjong also has a height advantage being 6 ft 1 inches compared to the 5 ft 10 inch average of all players of the Nepali National football team.[3]

Personal life

In June 2014 Chemjong became the fifth Nepali player after Sagar Thapa, Anil Gurung, Sandip Rai, and Ashim Jung Karki to own a car. Nepali players usually earn 50,000 rupees while on international duty and a 10,000 monthly rupee salary (both paid for by the ANFA) while playing for their clubs. Despite a salary that would be luxurious by most Nepali Standards it is rare for Nepali footballers to own cars because of the 230% tax tariff in place on important vehicles. Chemjong became one of these selected few when he brought a Škoda Auto.[9]

In 2015 along with Three Star teammate Bishnu Gurung Chemjong paid a visit to underprivileged children in an orphanage in Pokhara saying afterwards that it was a "day to remember".[10]
