Justin T. Miller is an attorney and professor in San Francisco, California, and a national thought leader at BNY Mellon.[1] He is notable as a published author and nationally recognized speaker in the United States in the fields of taxation, estate planning and family governance. He has published numerous articles in publications such as the American Journal of Family Law, the California Tax Lawyer, State Tax Notes, Tax Notes and Trusts & Estates. In addition to presenting to dozens of estate planning councils and planned giving councils throughout the country,[2] he has been a frequent presenter at major conferences, including events hosted by the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys (AAML), the American Bar Association (ABA),[3] the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA),[4] Golden Gate University School of Law,[5] the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA),[6] the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP),[7] Santa Clara University School of Law,[8] Silicon Valley Community Foundation,[9] the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP),[10] Stanford Law School,[11] the State Bar of California,[12] the State Bar of Georgia, UCLA School of Law,[13] Vistage International,[14] the Washington State Bar Association, and the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO). Education

Miller grew up in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, California. He attended Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades, where he began taking college level courses in physics and calculus at the age of 15. By the age of 16, he was offered early acceptance into the UCLA honors program. In addition, he was concertmaster of the Palisades High School orchestra, an all city varsity tennis player, and starting offensive lineman on the Palisades High School football team. Miller earned his bachelor’s degree, with honors, in only 2 1/2 years from the University of California at Berkeley in 1995 with a major in political science and a minor in music. He received a master of laws in taxation and a juris doctor in 1999 from New York University School of Law, where he participated in an accelerated joint degree program. He also earned his credentials as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) in 2005.[26]

Professional Life

Miller began his career as an attorney at the international law firm of Sidley Austin in 1999. He joined Wells Fargo in 2005, and was promoted to the position of senior vice president and managing director by the time he was 30.[27] In 2011, Miller joined BNY Mellon as a national wealth strategist.[28] And, in 2012, he became an adjunct professor at Golden Gate University School of Law.[29] In 2016, he was elected to the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, an honorary organization of lawyers, judges, law faculty and legal scholars whose public and private careers demonstrate exceptional dedication to their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession. Membership to the Fellows is limited to less than one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction.

Miller is a member of the Bar of the United States Tax Court and a member of the State Bar of California.[30] He also has served as a member of the executive committee of the State Bar of California Taxation Section (California’s only statewide tax bar association, with a membership of more than 3,000),[31] editor-in-chief of the prestigious California Tax Lawyer publication,[32] a member of the executive committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Taxation Section,[33] and chair of Century City Bar Association Taxation Section.

In addition to his professional activities, Miller has a long history of volunteering his time for charitable endeavors. He has served as a member of the board of directors of the California Bar Foundation,[34] a member of the board of directors of the Constitutional Rights Foundation and a regular participant in the Bar Association of San Francisco Landlord Tenant Project.
