Justice League: Mortal is both an abandoned 2009 superhero film, based on the DC Comics characters Justice League, to be directed by George Miller with a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, and an upcoming 2016 documentary on the film, directed by Ryan Unicomb and produced by Maria Lewis and Aaron Cater.

In February 2007, Warner Bros. hired Kieran and Michele Mulroney to write a script for Justice League Mortal,[2] which they handed in that June to positive feedback from the studio.[3] George Miller signed to direct in September 2007, while the studio hoped filming would start before the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. In addition, the studio was considering filming Justice League Mortal completely in motion capture, similar to Beowulf.[4] Barrie Osbourne would produce,[5] with a $220 million budget.[6]

Filming was supposed to start in February 2008,[7] in Australia, where post-production would also be conducted.[8] Some shooting was to take place at Sydney Heads, while local colleges were scouted.[5] But in January 2008, Warner Bros. announced the film was on indefinite hold, allowing an options lapse for the cast. The studio felt the script needed perfecting, which was impossible because of the writer's strike.[9] As soon as the strike ended, Warners wanted to start filming in mid-April 2008.[10] They were still adamant for a mid-2009 release date,[11] and hoped to have filming start in mid-July 2008.[12] In February 2008 it was announced that production would go to Canada, despite Miller's wishes to keep production at Fox Studios Australia.[6] Warner Bros. still faced the possibility of a June 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike. The Mulroneys went back to rewrite the script for Warner Bros. and Miller's approval.[10] On March 19, 2008, the title Justice League Mortal was announced, and it was finally official that Australia would not be housing the production of the film. Miller explained, "A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking. They're throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs."[13]

Marit Allen was originally hired as costume designer, but she died in November 2007.[14] Weta Workshop took over costume designer, a decision which opens the possibility of their sister company, Weta Digital, doing the visual effects.[15]

Documentary

The film was announced on May 25, 2015.[16] Later, on July 17, 2015, three teaser posters depicting Batman, Superman and Green Lantern were released. The project is a co-production between Purryburry Productions & Caldwell Entertainment.[17][18]

Video game

There was a video game planned for release alongside the film. Going by the same name as the film, it was planned to be a third-person brawler similar to the Green Lantern video game. It was planned to be released around 2009, and the hopes were pretty high for the game. However, as the film faded into obscurity, so did the video game. No known evidence of what the game was about or any playable demos have surfaced online, but there are some screenshots of the game online.
