Julian Calor (born June 29, 1993[1]) is a Dutch electronic musician and DJ. Known primarily for progressive house and electro, his style also incorporates diverse genres such as hip hop and experimental.[2][3] Since 2013 he has released singles on labels such as Revealed Recordings, Cloud 9 Music, and Armada Music, and collaborated with artists such as Oliver Heldens and Quilla. According to YourEDM, in 2013 Hardwell "unveiled" Calor at Amsterdam Dance Event,[4] and in November 2013 Calor was ranked No. 1 on Billboard's Next Big Sound List, which looks at "the fastest accelerating artists during the past week, across all major social music sites, statistically predicted to achieve future success, as measured by Next Big Sound."[5] He has since performed at venues such as Ministry of Sound and at international festivals such as Tomorrowland, Dance Valley and Creamfields.[6] His debut album Evolve was released through Revealed Recordings on May 1, 2015.[7]
Early life
Julian Calor was born on June 29, 1993[1] in Wageningen, Netherlands, where he spent his youth.[1] He began making electronic music in a studio setting in 2006, when he was thirteen years old.[1] By 2008 he was producing his first hip hop tracks, and he soon branched into other genres as well.[8]
Music career
Early releases (2012-2013)
In 2012 Calor began mixing house music, particularly progressive house and related genres such as electro.[8] He sent some of his early house demos to Revealed Recordings, a Dutch electronic music label operated by Hardwell.[1] Before publishing his first tracks through Revealed, however, he released a collaborative single with Tom & Jame on August 9, 2013, through Deal Records.[2] The track was re-released through Cloud 9 Holland Music Publishing on September 2, 2013.[9][9] On October 14, 2013, Wooha! released "Triumph," a collaborative single between Calor and Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens.[10][11] The same day, Calor's track "Special Dial" was included on a Revealed compilation EP.[2] In the first week of November 2013, Calor was ranked No. 1 on Billboard's Next Big Sound List, above Khloe Thomas and George Ezra. The chart looks at "the fastest accelerating artists during the past week, across all major social music sites, statistically predicted to achieve future success, as measured by Next Big Sound."[5] Calor's single "Griffin" was then released through Armada Music on December 23, 2013.[9] According to YourEDM, in 2013 Hardwell "unveiled" Julian Calor at Amsterdam Dance Event.[4]
Collaborations and singles (2014-2015)

On February 17, 2014, Calor released the two-track single "Typhoon/Storm" through Revealed.[2][9] The track reached No. 3 on Beatport, and also reached the No. 1 slot on Buzzchart in its opening week. Later, "Typhoon" would receive radio support from Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1.[1] Calor's single "Space Dial" was included on Armada Music's compilation Dance Essentials 2014 in February 2014.[2] Calor supported his recent singles with a heavy touring schedule, for example performing live with a number of Revealed artists such as Dannic in June 2014. The following month he appeared on day 5 of Tomorrowland, and in August 2014 he performed both at Dance Valley and Creamfields.[6]
Throughout early 2015 he released a number of promo singles for his upcoming debut album on Revealed. His electro house track "Evolve," for example, was released on February 9 to a positive review in YourEDM.com.[12] His single "Cell" was then released on March 23, 2015.[2] The next month, his relatively slow track "Another Template" met with a positive review at dance-charts.de, the official Dutch charts publisher.[11] His electro track "Apocalypse" was released on April 29, 2015 through LessThan3,[13] and your EDM premiered Calor's “Sorcerer” on April 30, 2015, writing that the track "combines soaring lead melodies with grimy electro drops and quaint percussion lines for a nearly four minute expanse of energetic bliss."[4] "Evolve" reached No. 2 on the Beatport Progressive House Chart, while "Cell" reached No. 6.[1]
Evolve and recent touring (2015-2016)
His debut album Evolve was released on February 9, 2015,[2][3] and through Revealed Recordings on May 1, 2015.[7] Guest artists such as Quilla recorded on various tracks[7] such as the downtempo track "To The Core."[8] According to Calor, he selected the album's name as a reference to his own evolving sound. About the production process working through Revealed, he also explained that "when playing around in the studio I wanted to experiment with different tempos as well, I felt no boundaries to try out whatever I wanted when making this album."[8] About the album, Calor stated “I tried to maintain the melodic story which best fits the journey I want to take the listener on, but bring in some additional flavours and give the overall sound a harder twist so the album is able to keep up the energy throughout… t was important to me to produce an album that was fluid from its opening track running through each of the tracks and ending on this big finale.”[13]
He performed at a number of major festivals in 2015, including Kingsland Festival in April, Tomorrowland Brasil and Dancesquare in May, Access and Tomorrowland in July, Creamfields in Calor had also performed at the main stage of Summerfestival by late 2015, and had taken part in the Hardwell Presents Revealed party held at the Heineken Music Hall during ADE 2015.[1] In September 2015 he performed eight dates through the Revealed Recordings Asia Club tour, appearing in cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. He returned to Amsterdam to record a Beatport Live Studio set.[1] He has performed at notable clubs such as Ministry of Sound in London and Ushuaia in Ibiza.[1] After several months without a release, Calor's single "Power" came out through Revealed on November 23, 2015.[2] Calor also hosted Revealed Radio 010, an installment in the weekly radio show hosted by Revealed DJs.[14]
