List of The Voice UK finalists (series 1)

The first series of the talent show The Voice UK began broadcasting on 24 March 2012. The coaches are Tom Jones, Jessie J, Danny O'Donoghue of The Script and will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas. Each coach chose who they wanted on their team by pressing their "I Want You" button. When one or more coaches turned around, the contestant chose which team he or she wanted to join. If none of the coaches pressed their button by the end of the contestant's song, all four coaches turned around to give advice to the contestant who would not progress in the show.[1] The show was won by Leanne Mitchell, mentored by Tom Jones, who took the £100,000 and record deal with Universal Republic Records, with Tyler James and Bo Bruce becoming the joint runners-up (mentored by will.i.am and Danny O'Donoghue respectively). Vince Kidd, mentored by Jessie J took fourth place.

Team Danny

Max Milner

Milner auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty-one, originating from London, England.[2] Appearing on the first of four audition shows, Milner auditioned with a mash-up between The Beatles' "Come Together" and "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. The audition was met with a positive reception, with three coaches: Danny O'Donoghue, Jessie J and will.i.am all electing for Milner to join their teamsfrom which Milner selected O'Donoghue.[2] During the battle rounds, Milner sung "Beggin'" by Madcon against twenty-three-year-old Bill Downswith Danny crowning him the winner.[2] In the second live show, Milner performed "Free Fallin'", originally by Tom Pettyfinding himself in the bottom two alongside Hannah Berney; from which he was saved.[2] In the fourth live show, Milner performed KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", also incorporating elements of Ed Sheeran's "You Need Me, I Don't Need You"finding himself in the bottom three alongside Aleks Josh and David Julien; from which O'Donoghue saved him for a second time.[2] During the semi-finals, Milner performed The Police's "Every Breath You Take"though he was eliminated in favour of Bo Bruce.[2]

Bo Bruce

Bo Bruce

Bo Bruce, who was born in Wiltshire, previously appeared on Channel 4's Orange unsignedAct in 2009 before auditioning for The Voice UK. Bruce has performed extensively and in December 2010 she independently released a self-written EP,[3] entitled Search The Night. Bruce performed the David Guetta hit "Without You" for her audition on The Voice UK and opted to join Team Danny. Bo went on to become the Team Danny finalist and finished as the series runner up.[4]

Following her appearance on The Voice UK, Bruce went on to sign a recording contract with Mercury Records and released her debut single "Save Me" and album "Before I Sleep" on 29 April 2013.[5]

In 2013, Bruce also collaborated with Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol to record a track for the motion picture Star Trek Into Darkness, entitled "The Rage That's In Us All".[6][7]

Hannah Berney

Berney auditioned for The Voice UK originating from Chepstow, Wales.[8] Appearing on the third of four audition shows, Berney auditioned with "You and I", originally by Lady Gaga.[8] Two coaches, Tom Jones and Danny O'Donoghue elected for Berney to join their teamsupon which Berney selected O'Donoghue. During the battle rounds, Berney sung "Kids" against forty-seven-year-old Murray Hockridgewith Danny crowning her the winner.[8] In the second live show, Berney performed a mash up of "Cry Me a River" and "Cry Me a River" by Arthur Hamilton and Justin Timberlake respectivelyfinding herself in the bottom two alongside Max Milner; from which she was eliminated from the competition.[8]

David Julien

Julien auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty-three, originating from Manchester, England.[9] Appearing on the second of four audition shows, Julien auditioned with "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", originally by The Script.[9] Two coaches, Danny O'Donoghue and will.i.am elected for Julien to join their teamswith Julien selecting O'Donoghue. During the battle rounds, Julien sung "Dakota" by Stereophonics against thirty-three-year-old John James Newmanwith Danny crowning him the winner.[9] In the second live show, Julian performed The Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition"proceeding to the next round on account of the public vote.[9] In the fourth live show, Julien performed "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5finding himself in the bottom three alongside Aleks Josh and Max Milner; from which he was eliminated from the competition.[9]

Aleks Josh

Aleks Josh

Josh auditioned for The Voice UK at age seventeen, originating from Stevenage, England.[10] Appearing on the second of four audition shows, Josh auditioned with "I'm Yours", originally by Jason Mraz.[10] Two coaches, Danny O'Donoghue and will.i.am elected for Josh to join their teamswith Josh selecting O'Donoghue. During the battle rounds, Josh sang "Broken Strings" by James Morrison and Nelly Furtado against twenty-one-year-old Emmy J Macwith Danny crowning him the winner.[10] In the second live show, Josh performed Michael Bublé's rendition of "Dream a Little Dream of Me"proceeding to the next round on account of the public vote.[10] In the fourth live show, Josh performed "Better Together" by Jack Johnsonfinding himself in the bottom three alongside David Julien and Max Milner; from which he was eliminated from the competition.[10]

Team Jessie

Toni Warne

Warne auditioned for The Voice UK at age thirty-four, originating from Great Yarmouth, England.[11] Appearing on the first of four audition shows, Warne auditioned with "Leave Right Now", originally by Will Young.[11] Three coaches, Danny O'Donoghue, Jessie J and Tom Jones elected for Warne to join their teamswith Warne selecting Jessie J. During the battle rounds, Warne sang "Think" by Aretha Franklin against twenty-five-year-old Kirsten Joywith Jessie crowning her the winner.[11] In the second live show, Warne performed Tina Turner's rendition of "Proud Mary"finding herself in the bottom two alongside Ruth-Ann St. Luce; from which she was saved.[11] In the fourth live show, Warne performed "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" by Elton Johnfinding herself in the bottom three alongside Cassius Henry and Becky Hill; from which she was eliminated from the competition.[11]

Vince Kidd

Kidd (real name Matthew Protheroe) auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty-two, originating from London, England.[12] Prior to the competition, Kidd (under the name Protheroe) competed in the fourth series of The X Factor as part of the boyband Futureproof. The band ultimately made it to the 2007 series' live shows, having been voted off in the third week.[13] Appearing on the second of four audition shows, Kidd auditioned with "Like a Virgin", originally by Madonnawith all four coaches electing for him to join their teams; from which Kidd selected Jessie J.[12] During the battle rounds, Kidd sang "We Found Love" by Calvin Harris & Rihanna against seventeen-year-old Jessica Hammondwith Jessie crowning him the winner.[12] In the second live show, Kidd performed Elvis Presley's rendition of "Always on My Mind"proceeding to the next round on account of the public vote.[12] In the fourth live show, Kidd performed Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love"proceeding once again to the next round on account of the public vote.[12] In the semi-finals, Kidd performed "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouseadvancing to the final in place of Becky Hill.[12] In the final of The Voice UK, Kidd performed both "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Nobody's Perfect"the latter alongside coach Jessie Jultimately finishing in fourth place.[12]

Following The Voice UK, an eight-track compilation was released in June 2012 featuring Kidd's renditions of "Like a Virgin" and "Always On My Mind"; entering the UK chart at number ninety-seven and one-hundred-and-thirty-four respectively.[14] Vince released his debut extended playSick Lovein the United Kingdom on November 4, 2012;[15] which peaked at number one-hundred-and-ninety-eight on the UK chart.[16]

A music video for his second EP, The Zoo, featuring The Saturdays' Vanessa White, was uploaded to YouTube on 20 April 2013.[17] The EP was released on June 2, 2012.

You And Me was released as a single on iTunes on June 7, 2013.[18] My Gang was released as a single on September 11, 2013.[19]

Cassius Henry

Henry auditioned for The Voice UK at age thirty-two, originating from London, England.[20] Prior to the competition, Henry had two record dealsfirstly with Edel in 2002 and then with MCA in 2004. His debut single, "Broke", peaked at number thirty-one on the UK chartwhile second single "The One" peaked significantly lower, at number fifty-six.[21] Appearing on the third of four audition shows, Henry auditioned with "Closer", originally by Ne-Yo.[20] Two coaches, Jessie J and Danny O'Donoghue elected for Henry to join their teamswith Henry selecting Jessie J. During the battle rounds, Henry sung "Beat It", originally by Michael Jackson, against twenty-nine-year-old David Faulknerwith Jessie crowning him the winner.[20] In the second live show, Henry performed "Paradise" by Coldplayproceeding to the next show as a result of the public vote.[20] In the fourth live show, Henry performed Adele's "Turning Tables"finding himself in the bottom three alongside Toni Warne and Becky Hill; from which he was eliminated from the competition.[20]

Ruth-Ann St. Luce

St. Luce auditioned for The Voice UK at age eighteen, originating from London, England.[22] Appearing on the third of four audition shows, St. Luce auditioned with "Run", originally by Snow Patrol; with only coach Jessie J elected for St. Luce to join her team.[22] During the battle rounds, St. Luce sung "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (by Whitney Houston) against twenty-two-year-old Ben Kellywith Jessie crowning her the winner.[22] In the second live show, St. Luce performed "Promise This" by Cheryl Colefinding herself in the bottom two alongside Toni Warne from which she was eliminated from the competition.[22]

Becky Hill

Becky’s a sixth-form student, a singer/songwriter and a part-time barmaid in a pub. She has performed as lead singer of unsigned band 'Shaking Trees'. In her blind audition, she performed John Legend’s ‘Ordinary People’. She made it to the semi-final where she was eliminated. Becky took part in a webisode style series called 'The Rebelations'.[23] Since The Voice UK Becky has covered two singles on youtube - 'She Wolf' by David Guetta [24] and 'Not Giving In' by Rudimental.[25] She also features on Rudimental's 'Powerless' and covered Ella Eyre's vocals for Rudimental's Glastonbury 2013 performance of 'Waiting All Night'. She features on drum and bass artist Wilkinson's song 'Afterglow', the fourth single from his album Lazers Not Included on RAM Records.

Team Tom

Adam Isaac

Adam, 29, is from Exeter. He has been gigging around the South West for the past ten years and has even met the approval of Joss Stone's mother. Prior to his audition, he released an EP, See The Light,[26] and his dream is to play Glastonbury.[27] In November 2012, he released his debut album: "Train Tracks".[28]

Samuel "Sam" Buttery

Buttery auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty, originating from Tamworth, England.[29] Appearing on the first of four audition shows, Buttery auditioned with "Set Fire to the Rain", originally by Adele.[29] The audition was well received, though only coach Tom Jones elected for Buttery to join his team. During the battle rounds, Buttery sung "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley against thirty-six-year-old Aundrea Nylewith Tom crowning him the winner.[29] In the first live show, Buttery performed "A Little Respect" by Erasurefinding himself in the bottom two alongside Matt & Sueleen; from which he was eliminated from the competition.[29]

Ruth Brown

20-year-old Ruth Brown from London blew the coaches away during her Blind Audition and won a prestigious spot on Sir Tom’s team. She sang 'The Voice Within' for her semi-final performance, but was eliminated.[30]

Leanne Mitchell

Leanne Mitchell, winner of the first series of The Voice (UK), was born in Lowestoft in 1984. She nearly had a record contract when she was just 15. She sings, plays piano and the organ. She also writes music. Prior to joining The Voice she sang at a holiday park. In her Blind Audition, she sang Beyoncé’sIf I Were A Boy’ and both Tom and Danny turned around. After some deliberation, she took her place on Sir Tom’s team.[31] Leanne made it to the final, beating favourite Ruth Brown in the semi-final. She again beat the bookies' odds to win the final.[32]

Matt and Sueleen

Matt and Sueleen were both aged 34 and from Canterbury, Kent.[33] The couple had been teenage sweethearts. Matt worked as a chef and Sueleen was a teaching assistant.[34] They failed to reach the semi-finals of The Voice, after Tom Jones picked Leanne to go forward.[34]

Team Will

Joelle Moses

Moses auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty-one, originating from London, England.[35] Appearing on the third of four audition shows, Moses auditioned with "Rolling in the Deep", originally by Adelewith all four coaches electing for her to join their teams; from which she selected will.i.am.[35] During the battle rounds, Moses sung "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan against twenty-five-year-old Jenny Joneswith Will crowning her the winner.[35] In the first live show, Moses performed "I'm Goin' Down" by Mary J. Bligefinding herself in the bottom two alongside Sophie Griffin; from which she was saved.[35] In the third live show, Moses performed Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)"finding herself in the bottom three alongside Frances Wood and Tyler James; from which she was eliminated from the competition.[35] Moses subsequently went on to star in the West End production of The Bodyguard as Rachel Marron, performing as an alternate (doing matinee shows while Beverley Knight starred as Rachel Marron in the evening shows).[36]

Tyler James

Jaz Ellington

Ellington auditioned for The Voice UK at age twenty-seven, originating from London, England.[37] Appearing on the last of four audition shows, Ellington auditioned with "The A Team", originally by Ed Sheeranwith only one coach, will.i.am, electing for Ellington to join his team.[37] This was due to the fact that the other judges had already filled up their teams and could no longer turn around. During the battle rounds, Ellington sung "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye against twenty-four-year-old Jay Nortinwith Will crowning him the winner.[37] In the first live show, Ellington performed "At Last" by Etta Jamesproceeding to the next round as a result of the public vote.[37] In the third live show, Ellington performed a mash-up of "Just the Way You Are" and "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel and Bruno Mars respectivelyadvancing into the semi-finals as the result of the public vote.[37] During the semi-finals, Ellington performed The Beatles' "Let It Be"having been eliminated from the competition in favour of thirty-year-old Tyler James.[37]

Frances Wood

Wood auditioned for The Voice UK at age eighteen, originating from Wakefield, England.[38] Appearing on the second of four audition shows, Wood auditioned with "Where Is the Love?", originally by The Black Eyed Peaswith only one coach, will.i.am, electing for Wood to join his team.[38] During the battle rounds, Wood sung "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette against nineteen-year-old Kate Read with Will crowning her the winner.[38] In the first live show, Wood performed "Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Khanproceeding to the next round as a result of the public vote.[38] In the third live show, Wood performed Robin S.' "Show Me Love"finding herself in the bottom three alongside Joelle Moses and Tyler James; from which she was eliminated from the competition.[38]

Sophie Griffin

Griffin auditioned for The Voice UK at age seventeen, originating from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.[39] Appearing on the fourth of four audition shows, Griffin auditioned with "American Boy", originally by Estelle.[39] Although a self-confessed fan of The Script/coach Danny O'Donoghue, only coach will.i.am elected for Griffin to join his team. During the battle rounds, Griffin sung "Firework" by Katy Perry against twenty-seven-year-old J. Marie Cooperwith Will crowning her the winner.[39] In the first live show, Griffin performed "Titanium" by David Guetta & Siafinding herself in the bottom two alongside Joelle Moses; from which she was eliminated from the competition.[39]
