Jodie "Jody" Banim (born 1 April 1978) is an English football striker. He is currently player-manager of Ashton United in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
Career
Born in Manchester, Banim began his career as a trainee with Manchester United, but was released from their academy in 1996 and joined his local side, Trafford. He joined Altrincham in 1997, but moved to Flixton in 1998. He joined Hyde United in time for the start of the 1999–2000 season, but left to join Rossendale United in 2001.
He joined Radcliffe Borough at the start of the 2001–02 season, at once stage scoring in 14 consecutive matches, a national record,[1] before moving to Shrewsbury Town in December 2003 for a fee of £20,000.[2] He had scored 97 times in just 125 appearances for Radcliffe. He made his conference debut for Shrewsbury on 9 December as a second-half substitute for Duane Darby in the 0–0 draw at home to Telford United. He helped Shrewsbury to promotion back to the Football League, but was out of favour toward the end of the season. Shrewsbury turned down an approach from Swedish side Bodens BK in April 2004.[3]
Banim was transfer-listed in August 2004 and linked with a move to Stalybridge Celtic.[4] He joined Accrington Stanley on loan later that month,[5] with Accrington attempting to loan him out to Radcliffe Borough during his loan period.[6] He returned to Shrewsbury after a month,[7] but joined Droylsden in September 2004.[8]
In September 2005 he left to join Stalybridge Celtic,[9] with whom he won the Conference North player of the month award for February 2006.[10] However, in March 2006 he rejoined Radcliffe Borough on loan. In May 2006 he left Stalybridge to rejoin Droylsden,[11] and helped them to promotion to the Conference National for the first time in their history.
He joined Torquay United on loan on 29 February 2008,[12] making his debut as a second-half substitute for Roscoe D'Sane in the 2–0 defeat away to Grays Athletic. He started 10 games for Torquay and decided against an offered contract for the following season.
On 13 May 2008, it was announced that Banim would join Burton Albion when the transfer window reopened on 1 June, making him the first new signing for Burton ahead of the 2008–09 season.[13] He returned to Altrincham on loan in January 2009 and Droylsden on loan in March 2009.[14][15] He then joined Real Maryland Monarchs in April, prior to the USL Second Division 2009-season, but failed to make an appearance for the American football club.[16]
He started the 2009–10 season at Salford City.[17] In September 2009 he returned to Droylsden for a fourth spell, and on 25 September 2009 he re-signed for a third spell at Radcliffe Borough.[18][19][20] He then subsequently had spells with former teams Stalybridge Celtic and Droylsden,[21] before he joined Ebbsfleet United in March 2011.[22][23]
He joined Clapton for the 2012–13 season, featuring in their FA Vase match against Cockfosters.[24][25]
In January 2013 he moved to Ilford, also of Essex Senior League.[26][27]
Then, on 16 September 2015, he came out retirement following a spell working in Thailand to join Ashton United,[28] and scoring on his debut at Skelmersdale United on 19 September 2015.[29]
