Jennifer Golbeck is a computer scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park[1] and previous director of the University of Maryland Human–Computer Interaction Lab.[2]
She is a contributor to Slate[3] and frequent guest host on the Kojo Nnamdi Show, a talk show on Washington, DC's NPR affiliate, WAMU.
Education
Golbeck completed her Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park.[4] She also earned an SM and SB in Computer Science and an AB in Economics from the University of Chicago.
Research
Golbeck is known for her work on computational social network analysis.
She has developed methods for inferring information about relationships and people in social networks. She is well known for research into social trust. In her early work, she developed models for inferring trust between people in social networks. Her work includes some of the first methods for computing trust in social networks. This was also connected with early research on trust-based recommender systems.[5] She is the program co-chairs of ACM RecSys 2015.[6]
More recently, she has garnered attention for her work on computing "hidden" traits of individuals based on their social network profiles, including personality[7] and political preference.[8]
Golbeck has presented at TEDxGeorgetown about pets on the internet[9] and at TEDxMidatlantic discussing the need for new methods of educating users about how to protect their personal data.[10] The latter was selected as one of TED's 2014 Year in Ideas talks.[11]
