The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama. It was created in 1898, and serves those areas of Jefferson County, Alabama that are not part of a city-based school system. These exceptions include:

Leadership

The system is presided over by the Jefferson County Board of Education, which consists of five members elected in partisan elections for six year terms. The current President is Jacqueline Smith, the only Democrat on the Board.

Day-to-day operations are run by a superintendent. That post is currently held by Dr. Craig Pouncey,[3] who took over in June 2014, following the ouster of Dr. Stephen Nowlin after 16 months in office.[4]
