Jayathri Ranjani Samarakone (born 18 September 1953) is a Sri Lankan accountant, lawyer and diplomat. She is the former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Singapore.[1][2][3]
Early life
She is the third daughter of Donald Samarakone (formerly of Ceylon Civil Service) & Srima Samarakone (daughter of Mudliyar A. V. Rathnayake and Mrs Jennifer Rathnayake of "Ratnagiri Walawwa", Boralesgamuwa) has three sisters Kusum, Sucharitha and Deepthi.
Education
Jayathri Ranjani Samarakone was educated at Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo and went to the Sri Lanka Law College in 1979 where she passed out as a lawyer with First Class Honours. Then she excelled with Solicitors Examination in the United Kingdom in 1980.
Career
She started the career as an Accountant in 1979 at Sri Lanka Sugar Corporation. Later she joined Ford Rhodes Thornton and Coopers & Lybrand (Sri Lanka). Thereafter from 1984 she has had numerous experience working at SriLankan Airlines offices worldwide including India, Indonesia, United States of America, France, Germany, Japan and Malaysia. She was in charge of finalising the accounts of these overseas offices as well as the recruitment and training of accounting staff. She has also attended the Annual Airline Conference held in United Arab Emirates since 2000.
Diplomatic role
In 2008 she was appointed as Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Singapore, where she served as the head of the Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission for a period of three years. During this time, she played an important role in promoting Ceylon tea, investment, trade, tourism and strengthening Sri Lanka's diplomatic relations with Singapore. After the diplomatic posting she re-joined the Sri Lankan Airlines, retiring in August 2013.
