After his junior year he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign and returned to TCU for his senior year.[1] His senior year came to an end after tearing his ACL during the final game of the regular season.[2][3] Coats was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut in 2013 with the Kannapolis Intimidators.
