Jamal Dasuki Idris (born 6 July 1990) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Wests Tigers in the National Rugby League. Idris has played in many representative teams in the NRL such as: New South Wales and State of Origin. A centre, he previously played for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Gold Coast Titans and Penrith Panthers in the National Rugby League. He has also represented the Indigenous All Stars.

Background

The son of an Aboriginal mother and a Nigerian father,[2] Idris spent two years growing up in an Aboriginal mission in Forster on the New South Wales Mid North Coast with his younger brother, Isaac, and mother, Alana. The family moved to Sydney because of Jamal's interest in athletics, especially javelin throwing. Following several representative seasons in athletics, Idris took up rugby league in high school. His junior clubs were Chester Hill Hornets, Merrylands Rams, Fairfield Patrician Brothers, Bankstown Sports, Guildford Raiders, Berala Bears and Forster Tuncurry Hawkes.[3] Idris attended Great Lakes College, Westfields Sports High School and LaSalle Catholic College, Bankstown.[4][5]

Playing career

2008

Idris played for the Bulldogs NYC team in 2008. Idris made his first grade NRL debut for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Round 24 of the 2008 NRL season against the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium at centre in the Bulldogs 26-12 loss.[6] In his 3rd NRL match in Round 26 against the Canberra Raiders, Idris scored his first NRL career try in the Bulldogs 52-34 loss at Canberra Stadium.[7] Idris finished his debut year in the NRL with playing in 3 matches and scoring a try for the Bulldogs in the 2008 NRL season. Idris played at centre in the 2008 World Cup curtain opener match for the Indigenous Dreamtime team against the New Zealand Māori rugby league team in the Dreamtime sides 34-26 win at SFS.[8]

2009

In March 2009, Idris was involved in a fight with Bulldogs teammate Ben Barba, Idris allegedly left Barba with a bleeding nose after he held other Bulldogs teammate Lee Te Maari against a wall at the Wentworthville Hotel carpark, resulting Idris being suspended for one week.[9] In Round 10, Idris had scored what to be seemed the match-winning try against the St George Illawarra Dragons denied after Greg Eastwood obstructed Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward on the halfway line where Idris made the line break, the Bulldogs lost this game 20-18 at Oki Jubilee Stadium.[10] Idris performances early in the 2009 season prompted dual international Wendell Sailor to say: "What Jamal's doing at the moment, I think it's a lot better than what Izzy (Israel Folau) was doing at the same age."[11] On 8 September, Idris was Named Dally M Rookie of the Year[12][13] Idris played in 20 matches and scored 7 tries in an outstanding year for the Bulldogs in the 2009 NRL season.

2010

The 2010 NRL season began slowly for Idris. Idris scored two tries in the Bulldogs 60-14 win over the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium,[14] and a month later had a man of the match performance in Round 7 against the Brisbane Broncos in a Bulldogs 36-18 win at ANZ Stadium.[15] In Round 8, Idris then backed up with an entertaining clash with Timana Tahu when the Bulldogs played the Parramatta Eels in the Bulldogs 26-10 loss at ANZ Stadium.[16] Idris was rewarded with a centre spot in the NSW Country Origin team. After a strong performance for Country, including a try in the 36-18 win over City Origin,[17] Idris was named on the interchange bench for the New South Wales State of Origin team for Game I of the 2010 State of Origin series scoring a try in the 28-24 loss.[18] Idris was dropped for the second match but was named the 18th man. On 6 September 2010, Idris was named in the train-on squad for Australia in the 2010 Four Nations tournament, but later didn't make the final 24-man squad.[19] Idris finished the 2010 NRL season with him playing in 22 matches and scoring 10 tries for the Bulldogs. On 29 September 2010, Idris was the victim of an attack by his cousin whilst in Forster for a family reunion. His 20-year-old cousin, Beau Currie, later pleaded guilty to striking Idris' neck with a samurai sword and was sentenced to 18 months in jail with a non-parole period of 14 months.[20] Idris was not seriously injured and made a return to the Bulldogs for the start of the 2011 NRL season.

2011

Early into the 2011 NRL season, Idris was rumoured to have received contract offers from the Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast Titans. On 12 April 2011, Idris signed a five-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans, starting from the 2012 season.[21][22] Weeks later, Idris was selected for Australia, debuting against New Zealand in the 2011 ANZAC Test playing off the interchange bench and scoring a try in the Kangaroos 20-10 win at Cbus Super Stadium.[23] Idris played in 23 matches and scored 6 tries his last year with the Bulldogs in the 2011 NRL season.

2012

In Round 1 of the 2012 NRL season against the North Queensland Cowboys, Idris made his club debut for the Gold Coast Titans, scoring the opening try for the Titans season and putting on a big hit on Glenn Hall in the 26th minute, Idris scored 2 tries in the Titans 18-0 win at 1300SMILES Stadium.[24] Due to form and injury, Idris saw one of his less effective seasons to date. After consecutive years of making representative football, Idris didn’t see a representative jumper in 2012. Idris finished the 2012 NRL season having played in 20 matches and scored 5 tries for the Titans.

2013

Idris played at centre for NSW Country Origin side in their 18-12 win over NSW City at Coffs Harbour.[25] Idris suffered a season ending hamstring injury in Round 16 against the Newcastle Knights in the Titans 46-16 loss at Hunter Stadium.[26] Idris played in 15 matches and scored 4 tries for the Titans in the 2013 NRL season. At the end of the season Idris was involved in talks with the Penrith Panthers as he sought a return to Sydney on compassionate grounds to be closer to his family.

2014-15

On 7 January 2014, the Penrith Panthers signed Idris on a three-year deal. In a return deal, the Panthers released Brad Tighe from the final two years of his contract to join the Gold Coast Titans.[27][28] Idris missed Round 1 with a hamstring strain.[29] In Round 2 Idris made his club debut for the Penrith Panthers in the 18-17 loss against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.[30] Idris was selected for NSW Country Origin side at centre, scoring a try and was award Man of the Match in Country's 26-26 all draw against NSW City Origin at Dubbo’s Apex Oval.[31] On 29 May 2014, Idris was stood down by the Panthers to seek help personal issues, including depression and alcohol abuse, after he failed to report back to training following a four-day road trip to the Gold Coast.[32] On 23 June 2014, Idris returned to the Panthers by playing a match in the Panthers NSW Cup team putting in a solid performance in the 32-28 win over the North Sydney Bears at North Sydney Oval.[33] Idris returned to the Panthers first grade squad in Round 16 against the New Zealand Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium in the Panthers 30-20 loss.[34] In Round 17 against the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval, Idris scored his first try in Penrith colours on his 24th birthday in the Panthers 26-10 win.[35][36] Idris finished off his first year with the Panthers in the 2014 NRL season having played in 22 matches and scored 4 tries.

2015-16

At the end of 2015 Idris took a break from his sporting career. In 2016 he escaped a kidnap attempt in Vietnam,[37] opened an orphanage in Ghana[38] and joined Group three rugby league club Wingham Tigers.[39]

2017

On 27 October 2016, Idris signed a one-year deal with the Wests Tigers after one year break from the NRL.
