Interhash

InterHash is a biennial event, the granddaddy of periodic international Hash House Harriers events, where Hashers from different groups get together to run and drink beer.

Format

The term InterHash specifically refers to the World InterHash. Attendees vote for bidding Hash kennels to choose where the succeeding InterHash will be held. It is an Olympic-style election where voters have to rank each candidate on their voting card. During the ballot counting at the end of each round the votes initially allocated to the bidder with the lowest score are redistributed according to the second preference marked on the voting card and so on. The winner is declared once a bidder has gathered more than 50% of the votes overall.

There is no international body overseeing this election and technically each InterHash Organising Committee can decide on the voting process. Therefore, the event website changes with every winner and its URL usually follows the structure of the current one (http://www.interhash2016.com). So be aware that the web site worldinterhash.com is a private initiative and has nothing to do with the event that is the grandson of the original Hong Kong InterHash.

Occurrence

The InterHash has occurred as quickly as 14 months apart or with a gap of more than 2.5 years - date usually chosen during the best season of the host country - the only requirement being that the InterHash occur in the even numbered calendar year.

The (World) InterHash has taken place every even-numbered year since 1978

Host Selection

The host for the next InterHash event is selected by vote of all attending Hashers at an InterHash. Before 2004, voting was done only by club GM (Grand Master/Mistress) or representative attending InterHash at a GM's meeting. The GM's meeting has also been discontinued and replaced by a forum open to all but poorly attended (~100 at Kuching 2010).

Traditions

The T-shirts

The Survivors

As of 2006, there were 4 "survivors" - Hashers who have attended every InterHash. The Wolf died on 18 April 2010 during a Hash trail in Frankfurt, Germany, now leaving Philthy Phil, Drainoil and CheeBye.

The Down Down contest

There have been some variations in recent years. In 2008 (Perth ) "binge drinking" was banned from the venue, so the down down contest was hastily done during the old farts stroll meaning that many missed out. In 2004 (Cardiff), the competition was done without published announcement, off stage, with a similar missing out by some interested participants and spectators. The winner's hall of fame:

Other "InterHash" like events at the continental level include AfricaHash, InterAmericas, PanAsia and EuroHash. Some regions also have biannual events like InterScandi, InterGulf or annual events like Mekong IndoChina. Annual national (NASH) events are held in many countries around the world with PanAsia, InterAmerica and Aussie Nash Hash typically the biggest (attendance 700-2,000).
