The Hyannis Youth and Community Center is a community center in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It consists of two ice skating rinks, one being named after the late Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., who was killed when his B-24 Liberator exploded during a bombing mission.[1] The smaller capacity rink, named after a Barnstable philanthropist, Patrick Butler, who died in 2009, can be melted down leaving a concrete floor for dry floor activities. A removable event floor can be placed over the ice in either rink for other short term non-ice events.[2] The large Gymnasium offers six basketball hoops, removable bleacher seating and a curtain to break the space down into two full basketball or volleyball courts for maximum usage. A 1/12 mile elevated Walking Track above the courts offers a safe indoor environment.[3]
History
The rink is a successor to the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink, the main rink for the town of Barnstable.[1] It consists of two skating rinks, with rink one having a 1,500 person capacity, rink two with a capacity for 250, a gymnasium, a youth center, a three lane walking track, and other amenities.[1] The rink is home to the junior hockey Cape Cod Islanders of the International Junior Hockey League, and it is also the home rink for the Barnstable High School, Mashpee High School and Pope John Paul II High School hockey teams. It was the home rink for the defunct professional Cape Cod Bluefins of the Federal Hockey League.
Events
Since opening in September 2009, the HYCC has become a major center of activity, providing programs and special events for visitors from all over Cape Cod and beyond. Some of the events include the Cape Cod Hockey Classic featuring Colgate Raiders men's ice hockey team in their neutral site season opener against West Point. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference partnered with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce to bring 18 teams for the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Championship Tournament. The international 2nd Nations Cup (the first of its kind to take place in the United States) and US Figure Skating Theatre on Ice Nationals brought skaters from as far away as Russia, France and Australia as well as teams from California, Texas, Ohio, Florida and New England. In 2012, Senator Scott Brown made a successful half court shot at the center while visiting with kids from a local school.[4]
