Hillcrest Hospital

Hillcrest Hospital is a comprehensive-care hospital on Mayfield Road in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System.[1]

History and description

Hillcrest Hospital has its roots with Doctors Hospital. Doctors Hospital was founded in Cleveland Heights by a Dr. Richard Renner, who was an osteopathic physician. Doctors Hospital was in an apartment like structure in Cleveland Heights. In 1966, Severance Mall and the City of Cleveland Heights needed land to expand for a proposed Cleveland Heights City Hall. Doctors Hospital was on the site, and had to be moved or torn down. In 1966, Cleveland developer Dominic Visconsi approached Doctors Hospital for land on Mayfield Road near SOM Center. Visconsi had developed Mayfield Heights's Eastgate Shopping Center in the mid-1960s and with I-271 being built, this helped Mayfield Heights grow. In 1966, Doctors Hospital accepted a donation of land from Visconsi and ground was broken for a new Hospital Complex. The Hospital was and is still named Hillcrest Hospital. In 1970, the new Hillcrest Hospital opened for its first patients.

In 1984, Hillcrest Hospital, Huron Road Hospital, Euclid Hospital, and Suburban(now South Pointe Medical) formed the Meridia Health System. Meridia became the first networked hospital system in Cleveland, this served as the impetus for the Cleveland Clinic for its regional network. In the mid-1990s, the Cleveland Clinic took the Meridia System and started to form today's modern CCF system.

Hillcrest Hospital serves as level II trauma center for Eastern Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Portage County. Two victims from the 2012 Chardon High School Shooting were admitted.

In the summer of 2005, construction was completed on the West Tower, adding 103 bed spaces (for a total of 424) as well as two new operating rooms, an endovascular suite for minimally-invasive vascular procedures, and an expanded William B. Hirsch Cancer Center.
