High Schools Society is an educational and a student-based organization located in Ghana, West Africa. The organization, which is oriented towards linking students across the country, consists of a platform for high school students to connect towards career opportunities, interest, community service, and infotainment.
History
High Schools Society was officially launched in June 2011 by Curtis Johnson, then a student of Accra Academy, Ghana. Up till 2011 there was no active network of high school students in Ghana so Curtis decided to create such a platform for students. On June 21, 2011, he created an online social media page on Facebook called Senior High Schools and Colleges Page with the aim of providing news on high school happenings in Ghana and beyond. To popularize the page he sought the help of his cousin, Kwabena Baffour Awuah, and his friend, Ampofo Twum Michael who were very active on social media. The page which began with just one like generated more than 1,000 likes in three days owing to the publicity by Kwabena and Michael. In a short time it became a recognized source of news and information about schools in Ghana. In February 2013, Senior High Schools and Colleges Page was deactivated by Facebook following a report by an unknown source regarding a privacy issue. The page was retrieved and republished in three days after enough evidence was provided that showed Facebook’s Terms and Conditions of a page had not been breached.
Aims and Objectives
When Senior High Schools and Colleges Page was formed the primary goal was to provide news and information about high schools in Ghana. This was emphasized when most students in Ghana sought the social media page for such information. At the 2015 annual meeting of the Administrative Body, it was decided, after much deliberation, that Senior High Schools and Colleges Page had to be renamed and rebranded because the mission, vision and goals of the organization had gradually changed from just a page to a network organization. A historic decision was made when the team decided to rename it High Schools Society. High Schools Society would not just be a high schools news network but would be an organization built on the principles of establishing a platform for students to share ideas and innovation, get informed and connect/link up towards career orientation and goals. On November 1, 2016, the website www.highschoolssociety.com was officially launched to facilitate the ideas of the Society. Since 2011, the small social media page has gradually developed into a hub for all students in Ghana on a common platform.
Team
High Schools Society is under the supervision and direction of a group of dedicated young team known as the Administrative Body. Most of these young people are students of tertiary institutions in Ghana and abroad but holistically commit to interests of High Schools Society.
