Greengrass organises for the men to go game shooting on Ashfordly Estate, but they hear a gunshot, and Matty Lovell is found dead in the forest. Mike Bradley had earlier found a half-burned letter from Lovell to Charlie Penwarden apparently confessing to fraud, but soon works out that letters can be burned in a deceptive manner. But the assault is confirmed when a woman matching the description collapses at the Aidensfield Arms and is admitted to hospital. The perpetrator is a lot closer to home than you would think. But this is no ordinary burglary, when PC Mike Bradley checks a school jacket left behind. It's from a boarding school some distance away, where the boy's name is given as Tom Bamber. There's a further twist with John Monks, a House Master (teacher) from the school, who is hunting Tom down. A Smith 'n' Chip (Fish 'n' Chip shop owned by Tony Smith) is burned down in an arson attack. Suspicion initially falls on Jack Hall, fiancé of Sylvia Smith (Tony's sister). Jack Hall is resentful against Tony Smith because he has never helped look after Sylvia's mother, who requires constant care. But then when Police delve into some electricity bills, a very interesting story emerges. An old flame of Oscar Blaketon, Ursula Donne, makes an appearance, but she goes for Lord Ashfordly (another old flame). But he is reluctantly released by Sgt Craddock when it emerges that his mother is Craddock's dance tutor, whom he fancies. But when Richard clips a bicycle in a hit-and-run, the police are forced to act. When Richard is brought before the court, he is found not guilty, by judge James Green. But there's more to the judge than meets the eye. Lord Ashfordly had managed to drive off again, but his petrol tank was punctured, so he organises the mechanics at Scripps Garage to fix it. Jackie Bradley (Lambert) agrees to act for Jacob Fairbrother but that puts her offside with Edwina, her mother – who is good friends with the Henderson's. He doesn't like the solicitor he's been "given", namely Jackie Bradley. But Mike becomes suspicious about the case when he finds Lisa has given him a wrong telephone number. And he sees several similar cases around Yorkshire. And then there's a demand for hush money: "£500 to drop the case". David Stockwell and Vernon Scripps take on a ploughing job for George Walker, but David's bumbling efforts lead him to discover a "body" in a hidden car in the barn – which only turns out to be a bust (statue), which leads Vernon onto a case of insurance fraud of more than one kind. After the dust has settled, Adrian starts fancying Jackie.
Guest Stars: John Griffin as Humphrey Lettington, William Tapley as Adrian Miller, Stephen Chapman as Russell, Roger Grainger as George Walker, John Draycott as Andrew Bryant, Sara Markland as Lisa Preston. |
172 | "Consequences" | 25 March 2001 15 October 2011 |
Two explosions rock Aidensfield, and a Ford Transit was seen leaving the scene of each of the explosions. Police investigate, and learn that in the days prior to each blast, each victim had received a ransom-style note (a warning, but no demands), and anonymous (silent) phone calls, so they treat both cases as attempted murder. Then they learn from Forensics that the villain has used PE4 explosive devices stolen from a nearby Army base. Rev. Ronald Meeks meets Lord Ashfordly to investigate the structural integrity of St Judes, a disused church, and subsequently engages Vernon Scripps and David Stockwell to remove all the heavy material inside the church. And he wants to find a valuable font that he knows is (or rather, was) in the church. But David remembers that Greengrass got it earlier, so they get it, expecting a big reward. But then can anyone trust the Reverend? Oscar starts getting silent phone calls, but when Gina gets a ransom-style note, she gets worried. But then she remembers the connection between her and the other two victims. Jackie is hard at work on a divorce case, as it happens, for the assumed villain.
Guest Stars: Glynn Mills as Frank Metcalfe, James Faulkner as Ronald Meeks, Carl Cieka as Brian Tranter, Stephen Hartford as Major Forbes, Richard Graham as Pete Atkins. |
173 | "The Buxton Defence" | 1 April 2001 17 October 2011 |
Lord Ashfordly is expecting a visit from Russian chess champion Leonid Vorodin, and asks the Police for a permanent presence. However Sgt Craddock is not impressed when some valuable/antique chess sets go missing, with no sign of forced entry into Ashfordly Estate, despite PCs Ventress and Bellamy watching (admittedly there was extremely thick fog). PC Mike Bradley remembers a string of similar cases of burglaries with no sign of forced entry over the past six months. A ransom note for the missing chess pieces turns up, so Mike starts recording all incoming telephone calls to Lord Ashfordly, which eventually leads Mike to thwart an attempted kidnapping. Vernon Scripps spreads rumours about ghosts, dry rot, and explains the awful stench "from the neighbour's piggery" amongst potential purchasers when Claude Greengrass arranges to sell his place (where Vernon and David are living). Mike has trouble getting hold of his wife Jackie, which makes him a bit puzzled.
Guest Stars: Peter Czajowski as Sychen, Carol Alexander as Mrs. Brown, Ben Towell as Alan Buxton, Billy Pearce as Arthur Buxton, Pauline Moriarty as Mrs Rogers, Philip Rowson as Ned Foy, Jalaal Hartley as Leonid Vorodin, Richard Hannant as Mr. Tomlinson, John Finn as Zaikov, Stephen Hawksby as Mr Rogers, Jo Joyner as Anna Young |
174 | "Still Water" | 8 April 2001 19 October 2011 |
Vernon has an old friend, Dilys Powell, drop in on him, and gets an idea to sell bottled water from a spring on her property, as it seems to promote longevity. But there are a few obstacles to his plan, including a shotgun, an unfavourable analyst's report, and even the issue of who the water belongs to. Bill Dyer confronts the local auctioneer, Giles Sutton, accusing him of rigging the livestock market (organising, or permitting, the four dominant buyers of livestock to take turns at bidding, leading to low prices). In frustration, he smashes two car windscreens, and during his arrest, he explains the rigged market to Mike Bradley (as above). Fortunately, the two car owners do not press charges (one preferring compensation). And Mike decides to investigate the auction process. This leads to Mike being accused of "accepting" a bribe from Mr Sutton, and CID getting involved. Jackie guns for Mike with his superiors, but on the way home she reveals that she has been seeing Adrian Miller (from episode #171), and leaves Mike (saying that she felt suffocated in Aidensfield).
Guest Stars: Paul Slack as Bill Dyer, Justine Adams as Cashier, Jacqueline Clarke as Dilys Powell, Glen Kinch as Waiter, Keith Marsh as Wilf, Judi Jones as Gwen, Simon Molloy as DI Shiner from CID, John Nettles as Giles Sutton, William Tapley as Adrian Miller. This is Fiona Dolman's (Jackie Bradley's) last ever episode |
