Hands of Stone is a 2016 biographical sports film about the career of Panamanian former professional boxer Roberto Durán. It is directed and written by Jonathan Jakubowicz. It stars Édgar Ramírez, Robert De Niro, Usher, Ruben Blades, Ellen Barkin, Ana de Armas, Oscar Jaenada and John Turturro. The film premiered at Cannes on May 16, 2016 where it was received with a fifteen minute standing ovation, and was released on August 26, 2016, by The Weinstein Company.[5]

Plot

The film follows the life of Roberto Durán, who made his professional boxing debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2001 at age 49. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the WBC welterweight title but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in the November rematch, saying 'no más' (no more).

The movie details the relationships between Duran, his wife Felicidad, trainer Ray Arcel, manager Carlos Eleta, friend "Chaflan" and foe Sugar Ray Leonard.

The site's consensus reads, "Hands of Stone's strong cast and fascinating real-life story aren't enough to compensate for a crowded narrative and formulaic script."[18] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating, the film has a score of 54 out of 100, based on 31 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[19] According to CinemaScore polls, audiences gave the film an average "A+" grade, on an A+ to F scale.[20]
