General Information
Haarlem Model United Nations Conference
Founded in 1997 by Philip Terwiel, Benjamin Bilski, Tim van Kempen, Clara van Dijk and Marleen van der Kaaij, the first Haarlem Model United Nations conference was held at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem in 1998 with grant funding from the In Aeternum Fund, Hoogovens, Aegon, and the City of Haarlem. Approximately 200 students attended the three day event,[1] from Russia, Germany, Belgium, France and The Netherlands. Over the course of 20 years, Haarlem Model United Nations has tripled in size with 600 expected participants at the 2017 conference,[2] which will be held from March 31, 2017 till April 2, 2017.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors (BOD) consists of several teachers of the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem. Their main role is to supervise the organisation of the conference and to have a strong say in the making of decisions that have more long term effects. The Board of Directors is also the only part of the organisation of the conference that does not change every year and its members hardly change.
Secretariat
The Secretariat consists of the top-level officers of Haarlem Model United Nations who oversee all branches and activities of the conference, these are always students of the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem who are active and usually the most experienced Model UN participants. The Secretariat always consists of a Secretary-General and his or hers Deputy Secretaries-General. The Secretary-General is elected annually in June by the Board of Directors out of the Secretariat of last year. The Deputy Secretaries-General are elected annually at the same time by the Board of Directors out of students of the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem who have applied for these positions, these are respectively the Deputy Secretary-General of Information and the Deputy Secretary-General of Organisation.
Executive Staff
The members of the Executive Staff are appointed by the Secretary-General in coordination with his or her Deputies and the Board of Directors. Next year's members are chosen out of students of the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem who have applied specifically for a position and are active and experienced Model UN participants.[3] The Executive Staff consists of the following managements, each consisting of one or two staff members: -Financial Management (FM) -Conference Management (CM) -Information Management (IM) -Information and Technology Management (ITM) -Sponsoring Management (SPM) -Head of Hospitality (HoH) -Head of Admins (HoA) -Location Management (LM) -Academic Advisors
