H. Vasanthakumar (born April 14, 1950) is an Indian entrepreneur and politician from Tamil Nadu, India. He is the owner of Vasanth & Co, one of the largest durable goods retail chains in Tamil Nadu. He also owns Vasanth TV.[1] He was elected to Tamil Nadu Assembly from Nanguneri constituency in 2006 election.[2][3]
Personal life
Shri.H.Vasanthakumar was born in Agastheeswaram in Kanyakumari district to Shri. Hari Krishnaperumal Nadar and Thangammai on 14th April in the year 1950.
Vasanth&Co
He started his career as a salesman in the yearly 70’s. In the year 1978 he started “Vasanth & Co”, which has grown to be a network of 61 showrooms operating in Tamil Nadu and one each in Bangalore and Pondicherry in its 38 years of existence. With an annual turnover of 7000 million it encompasses several kinds of global reputed brands.
Vasanth TV
Vasanth TV was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi in May 2008 at her residence. Some of the programmes that air on Vasanth TV are ‘Manpesum sarithiram' and ‘Thayillamal Naanillai’ etc. Vasanthakumar's own program “Vetripadikkattu” has been telecasted on Vasanth TV every day at 7.00 am and 7.00 pm. It targets the youth audience, especially in Tamil Nadu.
Writings
Vasanthakumar wrote a book entitled Vetripadi Kattu, which was released on 17 September 2006 by actor Rajnikanth and his wife Latha Rajnikanth. His next work entitled Vetripadikkattu is set to be released on 15 February 2015 in Chennai.
Political career
He is a staunch follower of the Congress from his youth-hood and has accepted Shri K. Kamarajar as his political Guru. Vasanthakumar is one of the few politicians who sponsor their own political expenses.
Vasanthakumar won the 2006 Tamil Nadu assembly election to become a MLA, competing against S.P. Sooryakumar of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He gave an assurance to the voters that if his coalition comes to power, the ambitious project of establishing a Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri with hi-tech park would be considered.[4] He served as MLA from the Nanguneri Constituency of Tirunelveli district between 2006 and 2011. He is the Vice-President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and also the Chairman of the TNCC Traders cell.
Social work
Vasanthakumar has set up free tuition centers for poor students, launched interest free loan schemes for the welfare of the hawkers and pavement vendors, and distributed cycles with stainless steel thermo-tea drum to the poor under self-employment. Recently he had organized ‘Mega Job Fair’s in Kanyakumari district to provide Job opportunities to the eligible Youth of the district.
