Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL), one of the first Belgian companies listed in Brussels since 1956 (NYSE Euronext Brussels), is the second largest holding company in Europe, part of the BEL20, with adjusted net assets of EUR 13.76 billion and a market capitalisation of EUR 10.87 billion (as of 30 September 2015).

Shareholdings as of 30 September 2015 were:[1]

Company % of share capital % of share in GBL portfolio
LafargeHolcim 9.4% 18.5%
Imerys 53.2% 17.0%
Total 2.9% 19.4%
SGS 15.0% 12.7%
Pernod Ricard 7.5% 12.4%
Engie 2.3% 5.5%

GBL aims to become a core shareholder and, for mid-sized, private companies, to possibly take a majority stake. In either case, its ambition is to find new opportunities that could become “an incubator” of strategic assets over the long term. Ultimately, this investment category could represent between 10% and 15% of the group’s adjusted net assets. GBL therefore continued to purchase Umicore shares in 2014 and 2015 and became its largest shareholder with a 13.1% interest at 30 June 2015. In March 2015, GBL also became the main Ontex shareholder following the acquisition of 7.4% of the capital of the group. In July 2015, GBL announced that it had crossed the 3% threshold in the capital of adidas.
