Gold Coast Film Festival

The Gold Coast Film Festival is an annual film festival held at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and is also located across various locations across The Gold Coast from The Gold Coast Arts Centre and The Royal Queensland Art Society Gallery[1] on Australia's Gold Coast, Queensland. The festival is a celebration of film culture[2] that delivers a program of feature films, special events, seminars and workshops, special guests and art. The Gold Coast Film Festival’s purpose is to emerge the dynamic and creative culture community[3] and to encourage the next generation of homegrown filmmakers.[1] The festival offers a culturally diverse program of films such as genre films, internationally acclaimed dramas, Japanese anime, local independent films and national and international special guests within the film industry.[3]

Background

The Gold Coast has had over two decades of international film production with the world-renowned Warner Brothers Studios, the Gold Coast is a profound location for film and television production from its natural endearments, climate, beaches, marine life, rainforest and hinterland that made it an ideal location for film and television production.[4] The Gold Coast Film Festival has become a major event for the Australian Film Industry and ambitious filmmakers alike worldwide.[5]

Modelled on the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film, The Gold Coast Film Festival showcases the many genres of fantasy film, including science fiction, horror, special effects, animation, anime and children’s fantasy together with sidebar events. The festival is open to the public.

The Gold Coast Film Festival also supported Australia's first online video maker award ceremony, the Australian Webstream Awards in 2013 and is supported by ABC Gold Coast.[3] The Program Director, Mitch Ziems, helped open the ceremony that took place at the Metro Arts Theatre in Brisbane, Queensland on the 16th of November.[6]

The first Gold Coast Film Festival took place in August 2002, the festival director was Casey Marshall Siemer[7] with Oscar-winning visual effects specialist John Cox as patron.[8] As of 2014 the Festival Director is now Kylie Pascoe.[9] The Gold Coast Film festival has a cultural partnership with Supanova Pop Culture Expo as apart of the Gold Coast’s pop culture heritage[10] and also with QPOW! That is a celebration of pop culture and events including the opening night for the Gold Coast Film Festival. And is Supported by the QLD State Government through screen Queensland’s Screen Culture Fund, the tourism and events Queensland Regional Development program and The City of the Gold Coast.[11] The festival also has a series of free film making workshops and seminars[12] called the GCFF Future Filmmakers seminar held at Bond University for year 11 and 12 high school students who can explore the Bond University film and television facilities[13] for those who are interested in the film industry to learn from industry leaders, such as directing, writing and producing.[14] The festival also has one-hour seminars, workshops and panels called the inaugural REELLIFE program[15] tailored for the aspiring filmmaker on topics such as financing, film distribution and building online content, which are also presented by industry leaders.[14]

2014 Gold Coast Film Festival

The 2014 Gold Coast Film Festival ran from April 3–13 at Birch Carrol and Coyle Cinemas, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Broadbeach, with various events held in other locations.

The festival program will include a range of national and international films, including genre features, dramas, foreign films, pop-culture films and horror, as well as the festival's Cool Japan and Queensland Showcase strands.

The 12th year of the Gold Coast Film Festival was re- visioned with a ten-day program with film genres from family films, Japanese Anime, drama, comedy and locally produced Indie films.[16] Festival Director Kylie Pascoe said that 2014 marked a new beginning “ 2014 is the beginning of a new era for the Gold Coast Film Festival and I am incredibly excited by the potential for 2015 and beyond.”[16]

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckly stated that the Gold Coast Queensland is a premier destination for local and international productions from 2013’s filming of Angelina Jolie Directing debut of Unbroken and currently filming is the Hollywood blockbuster San Andreas with Dwayne Johnson, both films are produced at Village Roadshow.[17]

The festival opening night started with an international Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel which was a critics favourite at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014.[3]

The Festival showcased 40 feature films including three world premiers, with 15 Australian premieres and four Queensland premiers and featured a horror movie marathon which ran until midnight.[18] The special guest list included John Jarratt, Temuera Morrison, Ian Collie, David Gould and various other professionals in the film industry.[1] And with the pop culture partnership with Supanova, special voiceover guest John DiMaggio attended the event following Q&A after the premiere of I know that Voice.[16]
